APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: The minutes of the February 6, 2001 Faculty
Senate meeting were approved as amended.
COMMENTS FROM GUESTS:
- Debra Lasich, Executive Director of WISEM, gave a presentation to the
Faculty Senate on the mission of WISEM and the services that they provide to
the CSM community. She stressed that WISEM wants to provide services and
address issues that are not gender specific but pertain to and benefit the
entire CSM community.
- President Trefny
- Bob Baldwin and Nigel Middleton gave a report to the department/division heads on the status of the Petroleum Institute in Abu Dhabi.
- The millennium college bill was passed unanimously by the State Senate
Education Committee. It is now being reviewed by the Finance Committee for
financial implications. If this passed this year, the status of a
millennium college would not take effect until 2003.
- Robert Moore made a report to the department/division heads discussing
the financial implications of the decline in graduate student enrollment.
- Trefny strongly encourages the Senate to reinstate their evaluation of
the administration and department/division heads this year.
- Barbara Olds, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs,
distributed the following for the Faculty Handbook Committee Timetable:
March 21, 2001 Handbook Committee makes final proposed revisions
March 22, 2001 Proposed revisions posted on the Academic Affairs website
March 23, 2001 Information on proposed revisions distributed to the campus:
- E-mail to all faculty
- Memos to the Faculty Senate and Administrative Faculty Council
April 25, 2001 Committee meets to review input from the campus community and make final recommendations to the Board of Trustees (BOT)
April 26, 2001 Proposed revisions sent to the BOT in preparation for the May 3, 2001 meeting
May 3, 2001 Preliminary review and discussion by the BOT June 8, 2001 Final consideration by the
BOT
The Senators requested that the Faculty Handbook Committee address intellectual property.
Olds reminded the Senate of the CCHE visit to CSM on March 2, 2001 at 10:00 a.m. in the Ted Adams Room.
OLD BUSINESS:
- Faculty Evaluation (Klusman) – A motion was made by
Readey and seconded by Dickerhoof to evaluate only the department heads and/or
division directors this year. And that the evaluations be put in a sealed
envelope and returned to Klusman via campus mail. The motion passed
unanimously.
The Senate will pay for this evaluation.
By publishing the results of these evaluations on the Senate website and in
the Oredigger, the Senators felt that participation would increase.
- Presidential Search Advisory Committee (Readey) –
There were 189 contacts and 63 resumes were received. The committee is
contacting the references for the top 15 candidates. When this list is reduced
to less than ten, airport interviews will be held - probably the last of March.
NEW BUSINESS:
- Faculty Evaluations (Illangasekare) – Illangasekare feels that
other criteria besides student evaluations need to be used when evaluating a
professor on his/her teaching such as classroom visits and/or course syllabus.
Teaching evaluations need to be a continuing process not just relevant for
promotion and tenure consideration. Klusman and llIangasekare will report back
to the Senate on the criteria that other institutions use.
The meeting adjourned at 4:00 PM
