Former CU president to speak during Mines' Midyear Convocation

GOLDEN, Colo., Dec. 8, 2008 – Hank Brown, president emeritus of the University of Colorado, will deliver the graduation address during Colorado School of Mines’ 2008 Midyear Convocation, Dec. 12 at 9:30 a.m. in the Student Recreation Center, 1651 Elm St., in Golden.

Of the 307 degrees to be conferred, 162 are Bachelor of Science degrees, 121 are master’s degrees and 24 are doctorate degrees.
During the ceremony, an honorary degree will be awarded to Brown as well as Dr. Robert J. Weimer, professor emeritus in Mines’ Department of Geology and Geological Engineering.
Mines Medals will be presented to Leslie Olsen, retired director of Mines International Student and Scholar Services office, and Bill Young, retired associate vice president for Student
Life and director of Enrollment Management at Mines.
Brown was elected to five terms in the United States House of Representatives, and in 1990 he was elected to represent Colorado in the United States Senate. After leaving the senate, Brown served as the 11th president of the University of Northern Colorado. Following his service at UNC, Brown served as president and CEO of the Daniels Fund, Colorado’s largest private foundation, from 2002 to 2005. Brown served as president of the University of Colorado from 2005 to 2008. At CU, President Brown restored public confidence in the university through a series of measures centered on openness and accountability. By the end of his presidency, CU was enjoying a record level of public support.
