Former Colorado governor to speak at Colorado School of Mines Jan. 28

GOLDEN, Colo., Jan. 6, 2009 – Bill Owens, former governor of the state of Colorado, will deliver a lecture titled “An Optimistic View of Our Tough Times” as the invited speaker for the 2009 William H. Erickson Distinguished Lecture Series. The lecture will take place Jan. 28 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ben H. Parker Student Center Ballrooms, 1600 Maple St., in Golden. The event is free and open to the public.

Owens served two terms as Colorado governor, from 1999 – 2007, and was named “The Best Governor in America” in a cover story in National Review. He is currently a principal in JF Companies, a Denver-based land and development firm with projects in Colorado, Arizona and Texas. Owens serves on the boards of Key Energy Services, Highlands Acquisition Corporation and FESCO, a Russian holding company with interests in shipping, railroads and ports. He is also a Senior Fellow at the University of Denver’s Institute for Public Policy Studies.

Governor Owens’ presentation will be the third Erickson Lecture to be held on the Mines campus as part of this thought-provoking series. Justice William ’47 and Doris Erickson established the Erickson Lecture Series to help extend intellectual life beyond the classroom, bringing speakers with a wide range of experiences and expertise to campus. Since 2006, the series has featured Wayne Murdy, retired CEO and chairman of Newmont Mining, and Norman Augustine, who co-authored the National Academies report, Rising Above the Gathering Storm: Energizing and Employing America for a Brighter Future.
