Mines' experimental mine to host first ever collegiate mine rescue contest and challenge, Feb 24-25
GOLDEN, Colo. Feb. 10, 2011 – Colorado School of Mines and the Colorado Division of Reclamation, Mining & Safety present the first Biennial Collegiate Mine Emergency Response Development Exercise (MERD) to be held at the university’s Edgar Mine, 365 8th Ave., Idaho Springs, Colo. on Feb 24 and 25.
Two teams of Mines Students – including the first ever all-female team – will practice serving as the main underground mine rescue team, a backup mine rescue team and operating the incident command center. In addition, they will compete in a series of events including smoke exploration, a confined space maze chase, fire fighting, rope rescue work and patient extraction.
