Mines professor elected to National Civil Engineering Society governing board

Reston, Va. ― D. Vaughan Griffiths, Ph.D., D.Sc., P.E., C.Eng., F.ASCE, professor of civil engineering at Colorado School of Mines, was recently elected a director of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
 
This places Griffiths as one of 14 elected members on the governing board of a society with more than 141,000 members and an annual budget of $55 million. Griffiths will be director of Region 7 of the society, representing membership in Colorado, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.
 
Griffiths completed his masters degree at UC Berkeley and doctoral degrees at the University of Manchester, U.K. His primary research interests lie in application of finite element methods to a broad range of geotechnical engineering topics including risk assessment.
 
He was previously on the civil engineering faculty at the University of Manchester, and has held visiting appointments at Princeton University, the University of Sydney, and the University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He has written more than 200 research papers and is the co-author of three textbooks, “Programming the Finite Element Method”, 4th edition, Wiley (2004), “Numerical Methods for Engineers”, 2nd edition, Chapman & Hall/CRC (2006) and “Risk Assessment in Geotechnical Engineering” Wiley (2008). He gives regular short-courses for ASCE Continuing Education on “Risk Assessment in Geotechnical Engineering” and "Finite Elements in Geotechnical Engineering". He currently serves as an Editor of the Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering.
 
Griffiths is a licensed Professional Engineer in Colorado and a Chartered Engineer in the U.K.
