Mines recognizes top philanthropic partners

GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 10, 2011 – Colorado School of Mines announced this year's recipients of its top philanthropic partner awards at the recent Mines Century Society Dinner:

  • Professor Emeritus Frank Stermole and his wife, Dot, received the Tourmaline Award. A part of the Mines community for nearly 50 years, they have demonstrated a strong commitment to both academics and athletics. The track and field complex at Clear Creek is named for them, and their most recent contributions enabled Mines to light its soccer field.

  • Dr. Steve Sonnenberg received the Faculty and Staff Philanthropy Award. Sonnenberg has been a fixture in the Mines community since the late 1970s. He has consistently given to the school for the past 25 years and currently holds the Charles Boettcher Distinguished Chair in Petroleum Geology.

In addition to long-established philanthropists, an active base of young alumni make meaningful contributions to their alma mater. Four young philanthropists were recognized at the event for their commitment to Mines.

  • James and Louise Plutt graduated with petroleum engineering degrees in 1999 and 2000, respectively. They established the Jacobsen/Plutt Scholarship Endowment in honor of their parents, and they give significant annual gifts to the school. Both work for BP in Houston, but traveled to Colorado for the dinner.

  • Jack and Lindsey Sayers both graduated in 2000. The couple established the Ryan Sayers Memorial Award and the Ryan Sayers Memorial Scholarship Endowment to honor Jack’s brother, who was killed by lightning during a hiking trip. Last year, the Mines student body contributed the proceeds from an annual charity run to the memorial fund.
