Mines announces Center for Oil Shale Technology and Research

GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 13, 2008 – Colorado School of Mines President M.W. “Bill” Scoggins announced today the creation of the Center for Oil Shale Technology and Research (COSTAR)—a $900,000 per year research center headquartered at the school’s campus in Golden.

COSTAR is funded by three major oil companies, Total Exploration and Production, Shell Exploration and Production, and ExxonMobil Upstream Research Company.

According to Jeremy Boak, COSTAR director, the new research center will work on three areas of scientific and engineering research:
  • Geomechanics - studies of the physical behavior of rock during heating to produce hydrocarbons
  • Geology and Stratigraphy – studies of the depositional history of the oil shale in ancient fresh and salty lakes and how that history controls the hydrocarbon distribution
  • Geochemistry – studies of how best to determine the richness of the oil shale and define standard measures for reserves available.

Additionally, COSTAR will develop a global database of oil shale information that will be widely accessible over the Internet. This work will draw on the extensive Tell Ertl collection of oil shale research material in the Arthur Lakes Library at Mines.

Founded in 1874, Colorado School of Mines was established to serve the needs of the local mining industry. Today, the School has an international reputation for excellence in both engineering education and the applied sciences with special expertise in the development and stewardship of the Earth's resources.
