Mines hosting ExxonMobil-sponsored mathematics conference
GOLDEN, Colo., April 10, 2009 – Colorado School of Mines is hosting the 2009 Rocky Mountain Section Meeting of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), sponsored by ExxonMobil Corporation, April 17 and 18.
The event, themed “Increasing Diversity in the Mathematics Pipeline,” is designed to bring together mathematics teachers from middle school through college for a rich discussion of the beauty, importance and appeal of mathematics in our society.
Organizers anticipate participation from more than 100 university mathematics faculty, 30 undergraduate and graduate college students, and 30 middle school and high school teachers.
“The shared goal of these communities is to improve the mathematical understanding of our current and future students with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion,” said Barb Moskal, Mines professor and director of the Center for Assessment of Science, Technology, Engineering.
The Rocky Mountain Section of the MAA includes institutions in Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana.
