Newmont Mining Corporation establishes Earth Resources Center at Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colo., Dec. 21, 2009 – Newmont Mining Corporation has committed $1.2 million to establish a new multidisciplinary center in the Mining Engineering Department at Colorado School of Mines focused on educating new professionals and developing innovative solutions to key challenges facing the mineral resource industry.

The company has committed to provide this support over the next three years. The Center for Innovation in Earth Resources Science & Engineering will also incorporate expertise from other departments, including geology and geological engineering, geophysics, and metallurgical engineering.
“We know Mines is up to speed with the technical challenges our industry faces,” said Jay Layman, Newmont’s vice president for discovery and development solutions and innovation, describing why the company chose to support the center at Mines. “Their expertise goes beyond the leading edge of innovation. It's an expertise we as a company seek to leverage to help achieve our vision to become the most valued and respected mining company through industry leading performance.”
Mines President Bill Scoggins said, “Our expertise intersects directly with Newmont’s core competencies, and we are grateful that the company has strengthened their longstanding partnership with us through this generous contribution. We are eager to leverage their support to create innovative solutions for the mineral resource industry.”
“Newmont’s support for CIERSE will enable us to establish the center and attract significant research funding while providing our graduate students with opportunities to work with faculty, researchers and corporate partners to meet the critical needs of the mineral resource industry,” said M. Stephen Enders ’76, research professor and CIERSE Director.
Newmont Mining Corporation has supported Colorado School of Mines since the late 1960s when the company began offering scholarships for Mines students. Since then, Newmont has continued its support for students and research, and has contributed to the university’s experimental mine in Idaho Springs.
