Current Activities

The programs of the IIPA attract industry and government professionals from around the world to the Colorado School of Mines. Non-degree program enrollment and customized certificate programs account for the majority of the international students.

Non-Degree Programs

  • Enrollment in non-degree programs has included students from Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, Japan, Mexico, Israel, Korea, Mongolia, Spain, Sweden, and Venezuela.

Customized Certificate Programs

  • Since 1996, nearly 300 professionals representing various organizations and oil fields of the Chinese petroleum industry were awarded Certificates of Completion from short courses offered by CSM faculty members on the CSM campus. The courses, with durations from two to six months each, have addressed a wide range of topics in petroleum engineering, geophysics, geology, economics, environmental policy, and corporate management.
  • Through an agreement with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum, a series of technical short courses is being delivered by CSM faculty members to working professionals from the Egyptian petroleum sector. These courses, typically consisting of three one-week classes, address topics in petroleum engineering, geophysics, and geology. Plans call for expansion of this program to include course participants from throughout the Middle East and Africa.
  • The IIPA continues discussions with many other companies and government agencies from throughout the world regarding customized courses to be offered both at CSM and in-country. Most courses are projected to be non-credit or certificate-based, but the opportunity exists for some offerings to be eligible for “transfer credit” to regular CSM graduate degree programs.

English Language Programs

The customized technical training programs offered through the auspices of the IIPA are characterized by their rich technical content and academic rigor. Inasmuch as these courses are offered principally in English, it is essential that program participants have sufficient mastery of English to maximize the educational value of the courses.Recognizing that such language training is often not available, or is prohibitively expensive or time consuming, the IIPA has made arrangements to assist our clients in accessing the necessary language training in the most efficient and cost effective manner possible through the services of Interlink Language Centers.

While on the CSM campus, students can enroll in English language courses customized for their needs and technical interests. Using a proven student-centered, experiential, and communicative learning approach, students will acquire English proficiency through cultural experiences as well as classroom instruction. Each course will provide an important cultural orientation component to improve the students' ability to communicate effectively and thus maximize the educational experience of the subsequent technical instruction.

Key elements of the campus-based English program include:

  • Initial needs assessment to determine proficiency level and strength in skill areas
  • Course content customized for IIPA participants
  • Flexible instructional hours to accommodate IIPA course schedules
  • Small class size maximizes learning
  • Courses include cultural orientation, field programs, and social activities
  • Home stays and associations with American families may be arranged
  • Family support services available
