MEMS is a society for mineral, energy, and natural resource professionals who
apply economics, finance and policy analysis to the issues facing the minerals
and materials industries. These issues include supply and demand of mineral
commodities, international trade in mineral and energy raw materials, environmental
issues, natural resource, mineral and energy conservation, and related government
policies.

Tour of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) - 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm
A tour of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is planned for Wednesday, April 9, 2003. The tour is limited to 14 participants and reservations must be made by March 14, 2003. Cost is $10.00. The group will depart at 2:00 pm from the Golden Hotel. The tentative agenda (subject to change due to laboratory policy and operations) is as follows:
2:35 PM - Security Registration. All participants must have photo identification with them. US citizens will need a driver's license and all foreign nationals will need to furnish a passport.
2:45 PM - Overview of NREL at the Visitor's Center
3:00 PM - Tour of the Solar Energy Research Facility
3:30 PM - Tour of the Photovoltaic Outdoor Test Facility
4:00 PM - Tour of the Alternative Fuels Users Facility
4:30 PM - Conclusion of NREL tour

The top three student papers selected in an open competition for mineral economics research will be presented by student authors. These presentations are the final portion of the paper competition. The winner of the competition will receive the Torries prize for outstanding student paper.

Sustainability Indicators
Session Chair: Deborah Shields, Principal Mineral Economist, USDA Forest Service - Research and Development
During this session the Sustainable Minerals Roundtable process and status will be described, the indicators introduced and examples presented. Placement of the indicator set within the context of the larger effort to produce and institutionalize a set of sustainability indicators for the US will be introduced. Progress on the development of Canadian sustainability indicators will be presented.

Financial Decision Making for Sustainable Development
Session Chair: Dr. Graham Davis, Colorado School of Mines
This session addresses the broad interface between the economics of mineral investment and production and the concept of sustainable development. Philip Maxwell examines Chile's recent mineral-based development, and, using evidence from Canada and Australia, argues that such benefits can be sustained over the long term. Neal Brewster examines the impact of sustainable development principles on corporate investment and production decisions. Richard Schodde looks at the impact of a carbon tax, a tool aimed at sustaining environmental wealth, on the cost structures of a broad range of mineral commodities.

To register, complete our secure registration
form and submit it with payment to the Office of Special Programs and Continuing
Education, Colorado School of Mines, Golden, Colorado. Please use separate forms
for each participant. Registration with full payment must be received by March
14, 2003 to avoid the $50 late fee. Cancellations made by March 24, 2003 are
subject to a $25 fee. Cancellations made after March 24 will not be refunded.
The registration fee includes a copy of the proceedings, refreshments, and the
Distinguished Speaker's Luncheon on Thursday, April 10. The Thursday evening
banquet and Friday luncheon are at an additional fee. The fee does not cover
travel, hotel, or meals.

Location
The Conference will be held at the Golden
Hotel in Golden, Colorado, which is conveniently situated in downtown Golden,
allowing easy walking access to great shopping, sightseeing, restaurants and
attractions. Skiing, fishing, golf, gambling, and museums are just a few of
the many activities in the Golden area.
Accommodations
A block of sleeping rooms has been reserved until March 1, 2003
at the Golden Hotel. All accommodations are to be made by individual participants.
Please indicate that you are attending the Mineral Economics Management Society
(MEMS) Conference. Rooms are $86 per night plus applicable taxes.
Travel
Transportation is the responsibility of the participant. The hotel is approximately
45 minutes from Denver International
Airport. Shuttle service is available via Golden
West Commuter, located on level 5, just outside the baggage claim area of
the main terminal. The shuttle runs every half-hour during peak times and hourly
at off-peak times. Individual rates are $24 one-way and $44 round-trip. Visit

Weather
The weather in Golden, Colorado during the month of April is rather brisk. Temperatures
vary during the day - the layered approach is safest and a warm coat for spring
