Scientists study specific animals to learn about their interactions with the environment through field work and laboratory investigations. Work with them to discover how they approach scientific problems related to Colorado ecosystems. Participate in activities to use in the classroom that help students understand the nature of science. We will model the processes of scientific investigations through hands-on activities while learning the fundamentals of Colorado ecosystems.


THE MAYAN, INCAN, AND AZTEC PEOPLES (Gr. 3-8)

Discover the ancestral people and culture of Central America and Peru. Gain a contextual view within a broader picture of history from experts in the field. Create folk art similar to that created by the three cultures. Explore archeoastronomy, record-keeping techniques of the time, and connect their ancient skills to current science. Take lesson plans, activities, and resources back to the classroom.


NATURE JOURNALING WITH A LITERACY CONNECTION (Gr. 3-12)

Learn the art of nature journaling. Work with botanical illustrators and learn drawing techniques that you can use to create your own natural journal. Journal in locations such as the Museum, Botanic Gardens, City Park, and the Denver Zoo. Connect nature journaling to literacy standards through interpretive writing and poetry exercises.

PALEONTOLOGY AND DINOSAURS (GR. 7-10)

Teacher Resource Kit: $100 (Optional) The kit includes materials to teach the module, including dinosaur models, Dinosaur Ridge Field Guide, owl pellets, dinosaur bone and tooth models, etc.  Kit may be purchased at a later date if desired.

This module teaches students basic paleontology concepts through the study of dinosaurs. The hands-on student activities use real data collected in the field, model dinosaurs and fossils to allow students to look at the earth's past by using a problem-solving approach. In addition the module integrates science, mathematics, and geography into a high-interest topic.   This course is aligned to the Colorado Model Content Standards.


NATIVE AMERICAN ART AND STORIES (K-5)

Discover the ancestral people of North America through art and stories. Examine the rich oral tradition of Native American storytelling and the different reasons stories were told. View and create art in the style of Native American tribes. Visit Crane North American Indian Hall and get stories, lessons, and art activities to take back to your classroom.


BUGS AND BEETLES (Gr. 3-8)

Explore the world of bugs and beetles. Learn about the anatomy and classification of insects, which are the most diverse group of organisms on earth. Go on a bug hunt and start your own collection. Bring back lessons and activities to your classroom of budding entomologists.
