Explore Eric Carle’s famous bug stories, find language and art in nature with the Butterfly Alphabet, and bring home lesson plans and ideas that integrate visual and language arts.

FLY FISHING ENTOMOLOGY (Gr. 6-12)

Investigate the world beneath the surface as a trout sees it. Discover aquatic entomology (study of insects) from a fly-fishing point of view. Learn to distinguish among the multitude of fly patterns and the “natural” insects they imitate. Spend an afternoon on the river exploring aquatic habitats.

Integrate science, literacy, social studies, and visual art in this fun, standards-based workshop.

Acquire a working knowledge of parasitic diseases and how they affect their human hosts. Discuss the life cycles, host-parasite relationships, and epidemiology of common parasites. Laboratory activities emphasize identification of parasites. The book, New Guinea Tapeworms & Jewish Grandmothers, will be used throughout the class.
