GEOLOGY OF THE GUNNISON RIVER BY CANOE, Levels I & II (K-12)

    Lecture: June 11 (9:00am-4:30pm)
    Canoe Trip: June 13-15
Locations: The lecture will be held at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. The trip will begin and end near Grand Junction, Colorado.

Canoe this breathtaking river through the canyons southeast of Grand Junction, including the spectacular Dominguez Canyon (Wilderness Study Area) with its cascading waterfalls, high elevation potholes, bighorn sheep, and Native American petroglyphs. Explore the canyons while gaining an understanding of basic geologic concepts and viewing them up close. No previous geology experience is necessary.


CANOE WITH THE ZOO: EXPLORE RIPARIAN ECOSYSTEMS ON THE GUNNISON RIVER (K-12)

Locations: The lecture will be held at the Denver Zoo. The trip will begin and end near Grand Junction, Colorado.

Spend 3 days on this ecologically rich river learning about riparian ecosystems. Receive an overview of riparian and wetland ecosystems, and explore interactions among plants and animals that live near or in this river. Learn to identify animals by the clues they leave, as well as the clues left by the ancient people who lived in this canyon.


WESTERN WATERWAYS: ECOLOGY, HISTORY, ECONOMICS AND POLITICS (K-12)

Locations: The lecture will be held at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. The trip will begin and end near Fruita, Colorado.

Canoe through the stunning canyons of the Colorado River and examine geography, math, economics, social, and environmental issues as they relate to western water resources. Focus on interactive studies, role-playing, and participatory scientific programs, which will help you connect your students with current western history, the energy crisis, and the politics and science of the Endangered Species Act and the Colorado River ecology.

Explore 60 miles of wilderness along Utah’s peaceful Green River as it winds through the red-rock formations just north of Canyonlands National Park. Explore vast canyon systems which branch out in all directions on daily excursions, including one full-day exploration. The course will emphasize the unique geology of Utah’s canyons with some discussion of the impact of man from early explorers to uranium mining.


ASTRONOMY IN THE WILDERNESS ALONG THE COLORADO RIVER, Levels I & II (K-12)

Locations: The lecture will be held at Fiske Planetarium, Boulder. The trip will begin and end near Grand Junction, Colorado.

Get away from the city lights and view spectacular sights of the heavens along the Colorado River as you canoe through spectacular canyons. Learn about constellations, deep sky objects and basic astronomy, including activities for the classroom. Learn about the galaxies, life cycles of stars, and new topics in astronomy, including the newest mission to Mars.

Centennial Canoe Outfitters will supply all canoes, group equipment, meals, and canoeing instruction prior to the trip. You are responsible for your transportation to the river and back. No previous canoeing experience is required.

Level II Courses

Former participants in Level I classes can qualify for Level II credit by completing a special project to be conducted concurrently with the basic class offering.
