Paralympic gold medalists, Denver Harlequins to demonstrate wheelchair rugby at Mines Jan. 27

GOLDEN, Colo., Jan. 20, 2010 – Beijing Paralympic gold medalists Jason Regier and Chance Sumner, 2010 U.S. Paralympic Wheelchair Team qualifier Adam Scaturro, and the Denver Harlequin squad will conduct an exhibition emphasizing the unparalleled talent and ability of quad rugby players Jan. 27 on the Colorado School of Mines campus in Volk Gymnasium at 14th and Illinois Streets.

The Quad Rugby Organization, a nonprofit providing support, resources, and stability for wheelchair rugby teams, is teaming up with the Denver Harlequins quad rugby team to promote the hard-hitting sport.

"If you are unfamiliar with quad rugby, this is your chance to see a truly profound sport. The talent, competition, and drive of these wheelchair bound athletes are truly awe inspiring,” said Jonathan Senger, Quad Rugby Organization board president.

During the Jan. 27 demonstration sponsored by the CSM Rugby Club, participants from the audience will be encouraged to get in a wheelchair and play with the team to truly witness the power and thrill of such a unique sport.

"An exhibition at the Colorado School of Mines is a chance for us to demonstrate the athleticism and spirit of quad rugby players," said Jason Regier, Denver Harlequin quad rugby player and Bejing Paralympic gold medalist. "The Denver Harlequins are excited to expose the sport of wheelchair rugby to the Colorado School of Mines and Golden community."

In addition to the demonstration on Jan. 27, a film screening of the Academy Award-nominated documentary "Murderball" will be hosted on campus on Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. in the Student Center Ballrooms A & B.
