Readey selected Mines Distinguished Lecturer

GOLDEN, Colo., March 17, 2008 – Dennis Readey, Colorado School of Mines university emeritus professor of metallurgical and materials engineering, was chosen by his peers as this year’s Faculty Senate Distinguished Lecturer.

Readey’s presentation, “History of Ceramic Engineering Education by One Who Has Participated in About Half of It,” is scheduled for 4 p.m. March 26, Metals Hall in the Green Center, 924 16^th St. on the Mines campus in Golden.

“Changes in industry and the evolution of science, technology and education changed ceramics engineering education,” Readey said. “The changes it experienced are informative to current discussions about industry- and technology-generated engineering specialization and its impact on all engineering disciplines.”

Readey, who retired in 2006, joined Mines in 1989 as the Herman F. Coors Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Engineering and was head of the Colorado Center for Advanced Ceramics.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from the University of Notre Dame and a doctorate in ceramic engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Readey has been active in the American Ceramic Society for 48 years where he is a Fellow and Distinguished Life Member. He served the Society as treasurer, vice president and president and received the Jeppson, Purdy and Educator of the Year awards. Readey was selected as the Society’s Sosman Lecturer in 2002.

The Faculty Senate Distinguished Lecturer Award, established in 1990, gives Mines faculty the opportunity to annually recognize one of their outstanding colleagues. They select a lecturer admired and respected as an educator, as well as a person known for having stimulating ideas to convey and an ability to communicate those ideas effectively.
