Futures in Energy

"Futures in Energy" is an educational outreach program that brings together secondary school science teachers and talented high school juniors and seniors. Teachers and students (in separate classrooms) receive solid content-based instruction and hands-on training in this important earth science area. After the work-shop, a limited number of paid internships with local petroleum-related companies will be awarded to qualifying students. Teachers will receive a complete curriculum notebook and resource kit to teach this module.

What is the "Oil and Gas Exploration" Module?

The "Oil and Gas Exploration" module is a 6-week curriculum package designed to be integrated into an existing earth science or geology curriculum. It addresses various aspects of petroleum exploration, integrating geography, mathematics, and problem-solving skills with traditional geologic concepts. Through the use of real data from the geoscience industry and federal agencies - seismic profiles, electric logs, maps, and oil samples - earth science and the study of natural resources become relevant to students.

Teacher Training

The workshop provides an opportunity to actively participate in the module activities. It also provides the necessary scientific background for you to successfully teach the module to your students. Local field trips to view geology and a drilling rig will give you a real-life experience with the topic. Interaction with oil and gas professionals will provide a unique opportunity to get a personal perspective on the energy industry.

  • The program will be held June 9-13, 2008, at Pinedale High School, Pinedale, Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Wyoming. This is open to teachers outside of Colorado only.

  • The program will be held June 16-20, 2008, on-campus at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. This is open only to Colorado teachers.

Course Materials, Credit, and Stipend

All of the participants will receive a notebook with background information and activities. Earth science, chemistry, and physics teachers will also receive a kit for their school (one kit per school) that contains electric logs, seismic surveys, oil samples, core samples, maps, micro-fossils, audio-visual materials, and more.

Two semester hours of graduate-level re-licensure credit from the Colorado School of Mines are granted upon successful completion of the workshop. The registration fee for the course is $80.
