Ryan: Lastly, this isn't advice...but you need to know it anyways.

The end of my freshman year at Mines was bittersweet, though tending more towards the sweet end of the spectrum. It was startling to realize that I was already bouncing home on the train, when it seemed like only a month has passed since I arrived at the dorms in August. So it goes.

Though I really did enjoy the year, I am happy that it’s over. I made a point to have as much fun as possible, biking, dancing, trying new things and meeting new people, but nonetheless, school has been a lot of work. I honestly believe that the stress because of school will eventually pay off, but for now I’m looking forward to my last responsibility-free summer at home. I probably won’t ever be going back for more than a month.

The last few days of being in the dorms were awesome. Some of the highlights include filling up my RA’s room with crumpled newspaper, having a cook-out, making my friend eat 19 strips of bacon on his birthday, and having a sleepover in the hallway. There was also plenty other mischief that probably shouldn’t be mentioned on a school sponsored public blog… And, since I was the last one on my floor to move out of the dorms, I got to help everyone clean and pack. Hooray!

End of the year cook-out. Delicious.

And here is to my man Lars. He was a good roommate.

Now for the fun part of blogging for Mines -- giving advice to freshman!

First of all, if you plan on spending a significant portion of time at your desk, BUY/FIND A DIFFERENT OFFICE CHAIR. The chairs in the traditional halls are terrible. Oh my gosh. The cushion is essentially nonexistent, and leaning back doesn’t help. The first time you try to write a decent paper in one sitting, you’ll see what I’m talking about.

My second piece of advice is that if you find yourself miserable all the time, don’t give yourself the excuse “Well, this is Mines. What can I expect? LLLL” I heard someone say that once, and it was pitiful. Fun and excitement will not be thrown at you, but it is definitely there for the taking if you’re willing to put in the effort. Plan a trip for fall break or something.

Lastly, this isn’t really advice… but you need to know it anyways. There aren’t really any bells in Guggenheim Hall! They’re just speakers! It’s a lie!!!

Good luck next year! Say hi if you feel like it! (I’m the one in the corner)
