Sarah: Fun and Finals

Monday, December 19, 2011

Well I made it!  One Mines semester down, and many more to go.  The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of stress, but somehow there was still time for fun!

Kappa Kappa Psi

A great way to have fun at college is to join a fraternity!  That’s right, I’m a chick and I’m in a fraternity.  Kappa Kappa Psi is a service fraternity whose focus is helping the band.  We plan events, parties and fundraisers to help the band at Mines. It’s a lot of work, but well worth it since it’s helping the program that we all love so much!  Another cool thing about greek life is the family you acquire by joining.  Every member of the fraternity is considered your brother, but each member is also given a big brother to help guide them through prospective membership.  The fun outings and sense of community of Kappa always seem to make my days brighter!

Rock Band Party

Crazy midnight jam sessions are also a great way to chillax.  The Randall bible study decided to skip the studying and have some fun during our dead week meeting.  We met up at our usual time and went up to Mines Park where we proceeded to eat junk food and play rock band for hours on end!  I had originally intended to be back to the residence halls in time to write a paper, but around midnight I realized that wasn’t going to happen.  So I busted out my laptop and wrote my paper while singing any song that was thrown my way!  We ended up getting back to Randall at 3am, and the great time that night was well worth being tired the next day.  And for the record, I got a hundred percent on the paper I wrote that night!  But I don’t recommend procrastination; it doesn’t always work out that well!!

Dead Week

From what I had heard about it, I always thought dead week would be different from any other week at Mines… But I have to say it was more or less the same: days full of studying, nights full of fun.  There may have been a bit more studying than usual, but I hardly noticed.  When dead day rolled around there was most definitely a change in atmosphere, everyone really buckled down and 24/7 quiet hours began.  If you wanted to make noise you had to leave campus, it was crazy!

Now finals are behind us, and I’m comfy at home with my parents and my pets.  Part of me is excited to be back, to not have homework for an entire month.  But the geeky student in me can’t wait to get back in January and learn something new!
