Home Away from Home

It’s official; I have made it through my first 8 weeks of Mines!  That equates to five exams, two quant lab reports, eight calculus worksheets, five mathematica projects, eight physics assignments, one earth lab report, and more hours of studying than I could possibly count.  That being said, I am more than ready for a break.  That’s why I am writing this from HOME!!

For the last few weeks I have been counting down the days until I would finally be home, but now that I’m home I’m counting the hours until I return to Mines.  In the 24 hours that I have been away, I have realized just how much I love being at school.  That might sound crazy, but my insanity can be attributed to homework and friends.

Homework

Unfortunately, fall break is not a break from homework.  I brought two textbooks and a slew of notes home with me this weekend, and I have studied some… But it is hard to study at home, distractions are numerous and study buddies are non-existent!  I miss the studious atmosphere of campus.  At Mines there are people studying 24/7, no matter where you go on campus, someone will be doing homework.  And, since everyone is studying, there is always someone to help out if you get stuck on a problem or just need a recap on lecture.

Physics assignments aren't all boring, so long Barney the dinosaur at least you died in the name of science!

Friends

It has been great to see some friends since I’ve been home, but most of my hometown friends are away at college.  So even though I have people to visit and hang out with, hanging at home is nothing like it was over the summer.  One of the amazing things about college is that you always have access to your friends.   Whether it’s a midnight pizza run, a late night movie, or just some chill time in the dorms, when you are on campus you always have someone to hang out with.  I didn’t realize how fantastic that is, until I was cut off from it for a day.  I love being around my Mines friends, and can’t wait to see them at school Tuesday night!

Moustache time during a late night pizza run!

Home

Being home is great, I’m really happy to be with my mom, my neighbors, and my dogs, and sleeping 10 hours a night in my own (full sized) bed is magnificent.  But I will be quite content when I return to Mines because it is truly my home away from home.
