What are the benefits of CO-Op for employers?

Employers report several benefits to hiring CO-OP students:

  • Reduces the cost of recruiting and hiring entry-level professionals.
  • Proven valuable in evealuating students as potential regular full-time employees.
  • Students assisted in completing one-time projects.
  • Students can become involved in longer work projects and assignments.
  • CO-OP reduces the cost of training new hires.

What types of CO-OP positions are CSM students seeking?

Generally speaking, CSM students are interested in full-time one-term CO-OP opportunities, offering work assignments that apply the concepts they have learned in class.

How can employers recruit for CO-OP students at CSM?

Employers can recruit for interns by:

  • posting the job on DiggerNet
  • arranging on-campus interviews,
  • collecting resumes at Career Day, or
  • accessing our resume books.

How does the CO-OP program work?

There are three basic CO-OP work plans:

  • traditional alternating, where students alternate semesters of work and school year-around until graduation;
  • one term, where students have a one-tie, 6-8 month work experience; and
  • parallel, where students work full-time during the summer and part-time for two consecutive semesters.

Most CO-OP terms extend from May to Decemeber or from January to August.

How do students receive academic credit for their CO-OP work experience?

Students must apply for CO-OP before the work experience begins. As part of the application process, the student must meet with the CO-OP advisor in their academic department. Upon the student's return to campus, the student enrolls in the CO-OP course in his/her academic major, and writes a technical report related to the work experience. The student generally receives elective credit.
