Mines battled it out against Metro State on a Sunny, February Saturday with tact and control the whole game. The game was originally scheduled for Metro's Field, but it was unavailable and the game was moved to Mines.
Coming out strong, both teams were battling from the start. For most of the first, there was no score. Finally, at 4:30 left, Mines figured out Metro's defense and goalie ending the first quarter 2-0. Staying strong in the second, Mines tacked on another four goals with a few assists.
As the game went on, Metro got more and more chipy earning 15 penalties by the end of the game compared to Mines' 4. Mines scored four goals in Man-Up while Metro couldn't score any man-up.
At thirty two and a half minutes into the game, metro scored their first goal by sneaking a bounce shot around a defender inside. Not to be outdone, Mines got a fast break off the following faceoff and scored as well as scored 6 more ending the quarter at 13-1.
Giving up, Metro got 8 penalties in the fourth quarter for various slash, procedure and roughness infractions. Mines was up by three men at one point.
Scoring wise, Mines put one on the board at the beginning and one on the board near the end while Metro scored three last chance goals with less than 6 minutes to play against Mines' second line.
Noteworthy performances include Ryan Marsters as well as Mike Rensberger both scoring hat tricks on the day, and goalie Mike Stone getting a first half shut out.
Cheering on the sidelines, Mines had a crowd attendance of over 100 people in their first game of the year. Thanks to all who came out to see the game as well as Metro for making the trip across town. One conference game down- four to go.
Check out Mines next Saturday as they host University of Nebraska, Omaha at 2pm at the IM fields.
