Spring Season 2007

2-10-07 2pm - Mines v. UCCS

Mines Engineers WIN! Mines pulled out a 12 to 5 victory over University of Colorado, Colorado Springs on Saturday, February 11th. This was Mines' first game of the season and only second chance to get on a field due to the snow the last couple weeks. This game was marked by Mines' continual strength and the excessive and sometimes incorrect penalties thrown by the refs on UCCS. At one point, there were 5 flags down on the field all on UCCS. Mines held off the UCCS offense in the first and got 5 goals at the same time, with one goal in the first 2 minutes. This showed UCCS what the game would be like. In the second, Mines put in 3 more while UCCS got 2 up close and personal "one on one" goals with the goalie on transition. All is fair in love and lacrosse. In the 3rd, UCCS came out with a boost of confidence and fresh legs, but new goalie Chris Moore shot down 12 attempts with 5 saves. In the fourth quarter of a game that lasted 2 and a half hours, UCCS showed a little fatigue, but pulled off 2 goals from in close and one outside. Mines showed no goals on the board in the 4th but did manage to take 7 shots. Overall, Mines showed about three man up goals. Also this year, the Mines freshmen will be something to contend with as Adam Botts and Mike Rensberger both got hat tricks on the day. --Thanks a lot to UCCS for coming to Golden and proving you're a team that's committed, knowledgable and well led by a coach who knows what the game's all about. Hopefully next year, they can join the RMLC and make it a conference game. Go Mines!

Final Score: Mines 12 - UCCS 5

Fall Ball 2006

10-14-06 Colorado State's Fall Round Robin

2:30pm - Mines v. Denver University Club Lax

Mines has a knack for playing great games up to great teams. This was one of them. After playing CSU in the morning, Mines ran right into this game with 2 players injured, but still able to play. It was another game where one team would score and the other answer right back. After some confusion with the refs (still up for debate if Mines won with 5 goals), both teams played to the very end. Mines was ahead with 30 seconds to go and after a quick whistle, the Mines defense wasn't ready to play and simply let a DU player run inside and score. CSU's Round Robin Tournament stated no over-times, so the game ended in a tie. The day was filled with great goals, saves and one-on-one's. No one expected Mines to compete with DU's Club team, and yet we almost won. Here's to a great spring season at Mines sure to be filled with many surprises for the whole league.

Final Score: Mines 4 - DU Club 4

11am - Mines @ Colorado State University

This was yet another nail-biter where no one on the side lines could tell who was going to win. The crowd went wild as the first whistle was blown and a rivalry 30 years in the making, was put to the test again after a two year no-play. Senior Brian Stone of CSU is a remarkable player, but today, just couldn't seem to get anything by his younger brother, Michael Stone, the goalie for Mines. Luckily, sometime late in the fourth, after blowing out an ankle and breaking a wrist in the third quarter, Michael Stone was over-come with exhaustion and collapsed. Then, only when his younger brother was unconcious, Brian saw the opportunity and got his first goal of the day.

Actual Report: It was a fun day for both teams. Everyone on CSU knew about the brothers playing against each other and saw it as a time to relax about winning and losing, and just playing the game. Mines knew about this as well, but put out every effort we had to keep the game going. Mines' biggest problem of the day was clearing, and against the alert CSU offense, it was no problem just keeping control of the ball. It was one of the poorest played games of the Fall-Ball Season. Individual efforts rose above and beyond the call of duty on the Mines team. Players ran harder and longer than they ever had, but it just wasn't enough. The Club A National Champions of 2006 beat Mines 9-2, however, Pat Miller of CSU didn't score at all, being stuffed by Michael Stone 3 times. Thankyou CSU for a great day and hopefully next year we can do it again with three games.

Final Score: Mines 2 - CSU 9

10-8-06 Western State Fall Classic Day 2

10am - Mines @ Western State

Mines and Western just love to play each other. I can't remember most of the game now, but I know its always a good time. Jason Kealing is the worst player on their team and can't seem to score a goal on All-American Mike Stone, the goalie for Mines. Actual Report Not Available.

10am - Mines v. Metro State

This game was one to hold your breath for. Metro and Mines have always been similar caliber teams in the past... but not this year. Mines scored one, then Metro to match. Metro pulls ahead, and Mines answers back. Back and forth, this game was no one's to win. Metro pulled ahead in the second quarter and kept the lead for half of the third quarter. Down by three, Head Coach, Dan Hunter, called a time-out. After regrouping, Mines came out of the blocks like a well oiled machine. Players simply weren't dropping the ball, ever. Mines scored two goals right away and struggled for the tie... Down in the last minute of regulation, rookie Ryan something snuck a shot high past the Metro goalie. Time quickly expired and sudden-death over-time was next. Like clock work, Senior Scott O'Connor won the face-off, passed to teammate Ryan something as he drove to the goal, and just as before, he snuck the shot by high. Mines won the game 14 seconds into over-time. This game couldn't have been won without every single player on Mines' team as everyone that morning worked themselves harder than ever before.

Final Score: Mines 12 - Metro 11 SDOT

9-30-06 2pm Mines v. Altitude

This was a great game. In it for the fun, Denver's Men's League Team Altitude agreed to yet another annual game versus Mines. Mines' assistant coach, Terry DeBell, is Altitude's Goalie, so the players were finally able to get a shot back at him for all those laps at practice. Not note worthy in either direction, the game was just to get used to running middie-lines and teaching new players the ropes. Occationally, play would be stopped to make a point about defense or offense. Near the end, tensions heightened as both teams just wanted to win. At the end of regulation, the score was tied, 11-11. After a quick break, play resumed in sudden-death. Going back and forth for several minutes and some risky calls by the ref, Altitude came away with the win. Thanks to Altitude for a great day and Mines can't wait to do it again next year.

Final Score: Mines 11 - Altitude 12 SDOT
