WHAT IS NEWMAN CAMPUS MINISTRY

Newman is a gathering of students, who have come together to share their Faith in a variety of ways.

Affiliated with the Catholic Church, the Newman Group had its roots on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.  A group of students seeing the need for spiritual growth as well as academic excellence formed the group and named it after John Henry Newman (1801-1890). John Newman was a college professor who converted to the Catholic Faith, and later, became a priest and then cardinal in the Church. Newman Campus Ministry groups now exist on college campuses around the world.

The purpose of Newman is to help Catholic college students (and any other students) to grow in an awareness of God's Love in their lives and to help them apply Christian principles to the subjects of their curriculum as well as their student lives.

Newman strives to be diverse enough to meet the many different needs of the college student.  There are those who have serious questions concerning their Faith and need to explore their Christian/Catholic Faith in a deeper, more personal manner.  There are those who enjoy gathering with others to Celebrate their Faith in Liturgy.  There are those committed Christians who take the Word of Jesus seriously and rather than just reading reading the Word of God in Scripture, they wish to put their Faith into action through various forms of outreach to those in need.

Realizing the personal difficulties a person experiences during the college years, Newman provides opportunities for personal interaction where problems can be aired.  If necessary the individual can be directed to a responsible professional.  A key element of the Christian Life is the need for religious experiences - where the Faith is felt in the heart and not just talked about with the head.  Newman provides several events for religious experience, weekly discussions, dinner and Mass, and Bible studies through FOCUS. Humans are social beings and it is our nature to want to be with each other that's why Newman also provides many social events during the year.

Newman is an organization of Christian/Catholic students, who, in a variety of ways, come together to grow in their faith and to share that faith with others.
