Being A Part of the Ski Team

You do not have to have prior race experience, nor be an expert skier to join the team. There are two teams, the men's team and the women's team. Both can have up to seven racers. If more than seven racers try out, alternates may race in place of a sick or injured racer. Only five of the seven racers "score" for the team. The other two racers are on the B team. If we have more than seven racers on a team, the extra racers can still race. They just have to race unaffiliated (not for the school). Very rarely do we have more than 7 racers on each team. If you're interested in joining the team, the first thing you should do is join the CSM Ski Team mailing list.

First Meeting

Ski team activities start in September with our first team meeting. There everyone is expected to pay the team dues of $50, fill out wavers and USSA registration forms, and pay for their USSA membership. At this meeting you'll get more information on everything, meet everyone, and probably eat some snacks.

Cost/Fundraising

Fundraising starts in the fall semester. Each ski team member is required to work a minimum of two CSC events (Denver Broncos games). Working a total of four events will also pay for your race camp costs. Otherwise, you can work two events and pay $100 for race camp. Every year we also show a Teton Gravity Research ski film on campus. Memebers are required to help collect raffle prizes, sell tickets, and help run the event. Dues and fundraising help cover the cost of your entry fees, your lift ticket for the Telluride, Winter Park, and Loveland races, your lodging and food for race weekends, as well as team equipment (gates, speed suits, drills, wrenches, helmets, etc). Here is a summary:

Requirment (Y/N) Item Approximate Cost
Y Team Dues $50 and work 2 events
Y USSA Membership $150 Scored or $80 Un-scored
N Race Camp $100 or work 2 events
Y Five-Mountain Ski Pass $519 for 18yo and up

Dry Land

During the fall semester we also do conditioning to help prepare for the race season. This includes playing sports, going to the weight room, and biking/running.

Race Camp

Race camp takes place the weekend after fall semester finals. Race camp is four days of training, skiing, fun, and getting to know your teammates. You don't want to miss it.

Training/Practices

We train at Keystone on Wednesdays and Thursdays during the months of January and February. We generally leave campus at 3:00pm, and car pool up. We are on the hill from 5pm-8pm.

Races

We have four regular season races. For each race, each racer has two runs on Saturday and two on Sunday. We have races at Beaver Creek, Winter Park, Telluride, and Loveland. For most races we head up to the condo Friday afternoon, and car pool.
