Fall 2008 Schedule
Kayaking at Clear Creek -- August 30
Join the ORC and the CSM Kayak Club for a day of free kayaking at Clear Creek. Stop by the kayak park between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. This is a great way to meet fellow kayakers, learn about the Kayak Club, and give kayaking a try. We will meet by the bleachers in the kayak park. No registration necessary. See you there!
Rock Climbing at North Table Mountain -- August 30
Join the ORC for a day of climbing and fun. We can teach you how to belay and introduce some climbing techniques. If you're an experienced climber come and enjoy some fun in the sun and meet fellow climbers. Transportation, equipment, and instruction will be provided for only $5. All abilities are welcome. Registration deadline: Wednesday, August 27th by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting for all participants 8/27 at 9:00 PM at the ORC.
Where to Go and What to Know -- September 3
Are you new to the area or perhaps curious about where to go for a scenic hike or bike? This free workshop is designed for everyone with an interest in hiking or biking the trails in the area. Our experienced staff will cover all the basics from what to bring to where to go. We'll handout some local maps, and provide you with equipment checklists. Examples of necessary gear will be available as well. There is no need to register for this workshop. Just meet at the ORC at 7:00 PM.
Lead Climbing -- September 7
Test your nerves and hone your skills with our lead climbing class. In this class you will learn how to read routes, clip into protection, recognize a back-clip and z-clip, belay a lead climber and catch a lead fall. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. This class is designed to teach you how to sport lead climb. If you are interested in traditional lead climbing (trad. climbing) please check out our Anchor Building Workshop. Register at the ORC before Thursday 9/4 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5
Backcountry Cooking -- September 8
No more ramen! Are you tired of eating mac and cheese and ramen in the backcountry? Let us teach you how to cook like a pro on a single burner stove. We will teach you a variety of recipes including how to bake in the backcountry. Simply show up prepared to cook and sample some good food. This workshop meets at the ORC and begins at 7 pm.
Bike Tune-Up Special -- September 8 - 12
Bring your bike in for a tune-up and save some cash. We are offering full bike tunes for only $15 for one week only! Stop by whether you are riding a $100 Huffy or a $4,000 downhill bike. We'll be sure to give your ride lots of love. See our website for a complete description of what our tune-up includes. If you arenâÂÂt sure if you need a tune or not check out our website; we also have a list of questions that should help you determine if your bike needs work. Bikes are completed on a first come first serve basis and we will only be accepting the first 40 bikes that come in so don't wait until Fri. afternoon to stop by.
National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) Bus -- September 12
As the nation's gas prices continue to rise, the non-profit National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) has found a better way to get around. The school has a 36-foot bus fueled by French fries and other ingredients traveling the country, providing an active, environmentally conscious way to learn about the outdoors.
The bus will visit The Colorado School of the Mines on Friday, September 12th, 2007 from 11:30 am - 4:00 p.m. The bus will be set up in Parking Lot D directly across from the West side of the Student Recreation Center.
The bus runs on recycled vegetable oil (RVO), a cleaner, renewable alternative to petroleum. So far, the bus has traveled more than 20,000 miles on RVO during its 240-day journey crossing the country. This approach has saved 2,000 gallons of petroleum, and eliminated sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions while significantly reducing the release of other particulates. The specially adapted vehicle is also equipped with solar panels that power its audio-visual equipment, lights and computers. Additionally, the bus has a rock climbing wall on the side of it.
Bike Maintenance Workshop I -- September 16
This is the first in the series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this fall.
This workshop will focus on the basics of bike maintenance. We will cover how to change a tire, adjust your brakes, minor derailleur adjustments and more. Feel free to bring your bike and ask specific questions. Our experienced mechanic will share his knowledge and tips to keep your bike in excellent condition. This workshop will begin at 7 pm and will be conducted at the ORC.
REEL Rock Tour -- September 19
This yearÂs film, The Sharp End showcases the climbers who risk everything to do the worlds most dangerous and committing climbs. Run-out traditional routes, scary highball boulder problems, ice-covered alpine walls and all-or-nothing free-solo ascents are all part of the game. The Sharp End features Alex Honnold, Dean Potter, Mike Patz, Steph Davis, Tommy Caldwell, Jonny Copp, Lisa Rands and many more. This show will be free for the CSM Community (MUST PRESENT A BLASTERCARD AT THE DOOR) and will cost anyone without a Blastercard $5 at the door. The show will take place in Coolbaugh Hall room 209 on the Colorado School of Mines Campus. Doors open at 7 pm donÂt be late!
Bouldering Competition -- September 20
DonÂt miss our Bouldering Competition! We will have categories for various ability levels including recreational, intermediate and an advanced. Competitors will also be divided into menÂs and womanÂs categories. The structure for the competition will be based on the American Bouldering Series format. With lots of great prizes this event is guaranteed to be a good time. Registration deadline September 19th at 6 pm. Cost is $15, sign up at the ORC today.
Bike Maintenance Workshop II -- September 23
This is the 2nd and final workshop in this series of Bike Maintenance Workshops we will offer this fall. Wilderness Survival -- September 29
The ORC will be conducting a wilderness survival workshop to make sure you have the skills to thrive in the backcountry. We will share techniques field tested by our staff. This workshop will include shelter building, staying found and much more. This workshop is free and will meet at the ORC at 7 pm; registration isnÂt necessary.
Ski Pass Blitz Day -- October 3
Back by popular demand for one day only! We will have representatives from Copper, Winter Park, Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone, A-Basin, Breckenridge, Loveland, Steamboat, and Eldora on campus to give you the best deals on season passes. This year the resorts are bringing sweet schwag, so we will be giving away door prizes including free lift tickets! The doors will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Student Center Ballrooms A & B. This year's event will include a Ski/Snowboard Swap so if you have related equipment that you would like to sell or you're in the market for some toys to play in the steep and deep stop by and check out what's happening.
Local Mountain Biking -- October 4
It would be hard not to enjoy biking through the Front Range. This trip is designed for beginner and intermediate riders who want to learn more about mountain biking. The registration deadline for this trip is Wednesday, October 1st at noon. This trip has a mandatory pre-trip meeting on the 1st at 9:00 PM at the ORC. Please bring your bike for a free bike safety check and learn all you need to know to be ready for the trip. Cost: $5.00.
Professional Climbing Clinic -- October 4
Stop by the climbing wall and learn from the pros. We will have a number of professional climbers on campus teaching technique clinics, presenting a slideshow, bringing demo equipment for all to try and much more. Don&apost miss this chance to meet and learn from some of the best climbers in the Front Range.
Rappeling -- October 5
Need a little excitement in your life? Have you always wanted to learn how to rappel? This class will be held at the climbing wall and will teach you how to rappel from our elevated platform. Sure to be loads of fun for climbers and non-climbers alike. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. Register at the ORC before Thursday 10/2 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5
Camping/Canyoneering: San Rafael Swell, UT -- October 10 - 14
Come explore one of UtahÂs greatest geological formations. We will spend the weekend hiking and camping in and around the breath taking San Rafael Swell. We will visit Goblin Valley State Park and play among the ghostly rock formations. We will spend time hiking through narrow slot canyons looking for pictographs. Don't miss this amazing opportunity to spend time in one of Utah's most spectacular playgrounds. Registration deadline: Oct. 8th by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on the 8th at 8 pm. The cost for this trip is TBA and includes transportation, equipment, camping fees and entrance fees to Goblin Valley State Park.

Registration deadline: Wednesday, October 22nd by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting for all participants 10/22 at 9:00 PM at the ORC.
Wilderness First Aid/First Responder Recert. -- October 25 - 26
The ORC is brining the Wilderness Medicine Institution to campus to instruct this essential course. The Wilderness Medicine Institute is a part of NOLS (the National Outdoor Leadership School) and is the leader in wilderness medicine. If you spend time in the backcountry it's only a matter of time before you'll need to respond to a medical emergency. Don't be caught unprepared. This hands on training will provide you with the tools and skills to make difficult medical decisions in remote settings. This fast paced intensive 16 hr. course will teach you how to recognize, treat and prevent wilderness emergencies. For more information or to register stop by the ORC or call 303-273-3907. Course Cost: $165 and worth every cent. Sign up early space is limited. CPR is not included in this course. This course acts as a recertification if you are a current Wilderness First Responder (WFR).
Fixed Line Ascension -- October 26
This class is designed to teach students the basics of ascending fixed lines. This is a great skill to have when traveling in technical terrain. Typically these skills are used when trying to exit caves that you had to rappel into, or any other terrain that involves fixed protection and lots of exposure. You must be top rope belay certified at the ORC climbing wall to take this class. Register at the ORC before Thursday 10/23 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5
Ski/Snowboard Tuning Special -- November 3 - 7

Caving at Fulford Cave -- November 8
Join us as we go underground to explore the mysteries of one of ColoradoÂs most famous caves. The cave is at nearly 9,000 feet, it contains and underground stream and the year-round temperature is about 42 degrees. We will spend the day climbing and crawling through underground caverns while observing stalactites and stalagmites. Registration deadline: 11/5 by noon. There will be a mandatory pre-trip meeting on 11/5 at 9 pm. The cost for this trip is $10 and includes transportation and some equipment.

Ski Tuning Workshop -- November 10
Are you tired of skiing or riding beat up gear? Stop by the ORC for this FREE workshop and let our staff teach you how to give your skis or board a high-quality hand tune and wax. We will teach you maintenance basics and show you how to use our workbench, so next time your gear needs some lovin' you won't have to pay someone to do it for you. This workshop will be held at 7 pm at the ORC.
Anchor Building -- November 16
Are you ready to seek a challenge beyond sport climbing? Sign up today for our Anchor Building class. This class will teach students the basics of traditional (trad.) gear placement. Using the distinctive features and cracks at the climbing wall students will learn how to place cams. stoppers and hexentrics. Additionally, students will learn how to combine these pieces of protection to create a trad. anchor. Register at the ORC before Thursday 11/13 at 6:00 pm. This class will take place from 3 to 5 pm. Cost $5.
Avalanche Awareness -- November 21
Ever wondered what causes avalanches, and what you can do to be better prepared to deal with them? Come to our avalanche awareness course to learn the basics. This course is a 2 hrs. classroom session and will be taught by the Alpine Rescue Team. This class will be FREE. No registration is necessary. The class will begin at 7 pm and will take place in the Student Center in Ballroom C on the CSM campus. FYI: In order to rent avalanche beacons from the ORC you need to have documented proof of avalanche training so donât miss this great opportunity.
