HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Created by a resolution of the Colorado School of Mines’ Board of Trustees on December 9, 1983, with a grant from the Coors Brewing Company, this department serves as the counseling center on campus. Originally designed upon the “Wellness” model, service delivery has evolved to balance the “student development” model of counseling with an increasing demand for more clinical services.

OUR MISSION

As an integral part of higher education, student development encourages educational interventions that stimulate self-understanding, strengthen skills and increase knowledge in the five dimensions of student development: Social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual and physical.

Student Development and Academic Services supports the educational mission of CSM by promoting psychosocial and cognitive development. We facilitate academic and personal success for all CSM students by providing resources that enhance and extend students’ learning and growth.

Our Goals:

In order to fulfill this mission, Student Development has identified the following goals:

  1. To provide the highest quality short-term individual counseling services by licensed professionals to students who are experiencing ongoing or situational psychological or emotional difficulties.
  2. To provide referral services for those students experiencing a need for longer-term counseling, beyond the scope of this department.
  3. To provide outreach programs focused on the developmental, personal, educational and cultural needs of our students in order to maximize the potential for all students to benefit from the Mines academic experience.
  4. To provide an atmosphere of compassion and acceptance that celebrates human diversity including race, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, age and disability, leading to a supportive, multicultural academic environment and increased student retention.
  5. To provide consulting services to the CSM community (students, faculty, staff and administrators) in order to facilitate the intellectual and personal growth of our students and increase understanding within our community.
  6. To provide crisis intervention services and consultation in order to prevent, resolve and/or minimize the effects of crisis on the CSM community.
