USGS Director and Mines President Unite for the Future

GOLDEN, Colo., May 12, 2011 -- Today U.S. Geological Survey Director Dr. Marcia McNutt and Colorado School of Mines President Dr. Bill Scoggins will sign a Memorandum of Understanding that creates a Science and Engineering Collaborative to guide and implement priority research in:

1) Rare earths and other critical minerals and materials including genesis, exploration, modeling, mapping, and economic analyses;
2) Uranium including discovery, recovery, utilization, and ecosystem and human health;
3) Multi-hazards including earthquake, fire, landslide, geomagnetic and volcanic; and
4) Unconventional carbon-based energy including basin-centered hydrocarbons, gas hydrates, coal-bed methane, and shale oil and gas.

Why: In a pledge to the future, Director McNutt and President Scoggins will sign an agreement to foster scientific relationships and provide opportunities to young scholars.
