Thank you for your interest in the Department of Chemistry and Geochemistry at the Colorado School of Mines! Originally founded with a focus on mineral and energy resources, CSM has evolved into a top-ranked university of science and technology. The Department of Chemistry and Geochemistry plays an integral role in the School's four thrust areas: earth, energy, materials, and environment.

We offer three ACS approved B.S. curricular tracks emphasizing environmental chemistry, biochemistry, or a more flexible applied chemistry track which can be tailored to optimize preparation consistent with students' career goals. Those aspiring to enter Ph.D. programs in chemistry are encouraged to include undergraduate research beyond the minimum required among their elective hours. Others interested in industrial chemistry choose area of special interest courses in chemical engineering or metallurgy, for example. A significant number of students complete degrees in both chemistry and chemical engineering as an excellent preparation for industrial careers.

Our graduate programs emphasize interdisciplinary approaches to solving real-world problems in areas such as alternative fuels, bio-detection, polymer and nanoscale materials, and water quality, just to name a few. Students and faculty work alongside other departments campus-wide and with nearby government agencies such as the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS) to develop solutions for a sustainable environment.

Our growing department offers a low student-to-faculty ratio, ensuring a community atmosphere, small class sizes, and high accessibility to faculty research advisors. Funding packages including tuition, fees, health benefits, and competitive stipends are offered to all admitted graduate students. The School of Mines is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, a short drive from excellent outdoor recreational opportunities and the cultural offerings of Denver and Boulder.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions you may have about our graduate program. You are also encouraged to contact any of our faculty directly to learn more about current opportunities for projects within specific research groups.
