CSMCC to become ADIT

Summary: On Saturday, August 12, 2006, the AC&N domain CSMCC will be renamed ADIT. After this occurs it will be necessary to substitute ADIT in place of CSMCC wherever CSMCC was previously used.

The AC&N general purpose Microsoft Windows domain named CSMCC is the domain to which the workstations in the CTLM classrooms 129, 229, and 231, as well as the Computing Center labs on the second floor of the Green Center, the Writing Center, the EPICS computers in the Hall of Justice, and the open lab machines in the Library, use for validation.

Most times the domain name does not need to be entered at a workstation as the default value used is the that which was used on the previous login. The domain name is most commonly used when accessing resources from outside the domain. For example, from another Microsoft Windows domain or from a Unix/Linux system the domain name and user name must both be entered, commonly separated by a slash, e.g., csmcc\myuser. Two common reasons the domain is accessed from without are to access the CSMCC home space and to print to a printer housed in the CSMCC domain. It is also possible to validate for VPN or modem access using the CSMCC domain by using the username@realm syntax and using CSMCC as the realm, e.g., myuser@csmcc.

The CSMCC domain will be renamed ADIT on Saturday, August 12, 2006. To access domain resources (or use the domain for validation) after the rename, simply use ADIT instead of CSMCC everywhere you previously used CSMCC to specify the domain.

As an example, when mapping PC home space from the disk server hornet to a local machine that is not in the same domain, if you currently enter "CSMCC\username" you will need to enter "ADIT\username" after the change. (The FAQfinder entry with information about mapping drives is at URL: http://www.mines.edu/academic/computer/faq/q.cgi?Entry=1.006. If the documentation in the FAQfinder entry has not been updated to reflect the domain name change, please substitute ADIT for CSMCC in the instructions.)

Technical Details -- skip if you aren't interested: The domain name change to ADIT (adit, noun, a nearly horizontal passage from the surface in a mine) is to provide a more general domain name and thus facilitate the use of a common Microsoft Windows domain by multiple departments and organizations across the campus. (In reality, CSMCC will become part of ADIT, but the impact is that of a name change.) A common domain means a single username/password to access what today requires a distinct username/password for each separate domain. It will also allow easier sharing of resources than that required between different domains.

The overall goal is one of increased ease of use.

Parallel documentation about "ADIT enabled" is at http://www.mines.edu/academic/computer/adit/.
