Configuring your Modem and Windows 3.X for Dial-Up Access Using Chameleon SLIP/PPP Protocols

This document describes how to configure your copy of Chameleon to use the dynamic SLIP/PPP accounts. A dynamic SLIP/PPP account is identical to a normal SLIP/PPP account except that the IP address used by your computer is dynamic. The address will vary depending upon the port and the terminal server with which your modem is communicating. Use of this system of IP addressing eliminates the need to acquire your own unique IP address. SLIP and CSLIP are used interchangeably within this document. CSLIP is simply a compressed form of SLIP that allows for greater data transfer over the same medium. You should use CSLIP, not SLIP.

Do not make any changes on your computer until you have read this entire document! For answers to software-specific questions, you should consult the documentation included with your software. This document is provided to assist you in connecting with the Colorado School of Mines servers. It is not designed to help you with the Chameleon software. The instructions were prepared using an IBM PS/2 model 70 running Windows 3.1. Your system configuration will likely be different; therefore, adaptations may be necessary.

To use this document, you should have the following:

Instructions:

  1. Run the “Custom” Chameleon application. If you have just installed Chameleon, “Custom” is automatically run for you.
  2. Select Interface from the menu bar and then Add to create a new interface. Choose the type of interface you want to use, either PPP or CSLIP, and change the name of the interface if you wish. Hit OK to continue. (This step is assumed at the end of each entry below.)
  3. Go to Setup and IP Address. Set your address to 138.67.255.255. This is a “dummy” address which will change dynamically.
  4. Go to Setup menu and Subnet Mask. For CSM Computing Center computers, the subnet mask is 255.255.192.0. Either click on the second-highest order bit of the third byte on the bar-like display or simply enter a 2 in the box provided.
  5. Go to Host Name under Setup and enter in a “dummy” name (e.g. gumby). Because this is a dynamic SLIP/PPP connection, the actual name will be assigned based on the port to which you are connected.
  6. Go to Default Gateway under Setup. Type in the address 138.67.1.1.
  7. Go to Domain Servers under Setup. Enter 138.67.1.2, the IP address of one of the domain name servers (DNS) at the CSM Computing Center.
  8. Go to Domain Name under Setup. Enter the value for CSM’s domain name. Type in mines.edu.
  9. Go to Communications under Setup and select Port. Most of the defaults will be correctly configured. You will need to change two items. First, set the speed to a value equal to or one notch higher than your modem’s actual speed. Second, click the port number which which your modem is communicating. This will most likely be port 2.
  10. Go to Modem under Setup/Communications. Choose from the list the modem installed on your computer or the one that is most compatible. Click Select and then OK to select the modem. If you know what you are doing, you may use Setup to configure specifics with regard to your modem.
  11. Go to Dial under Setup/Communications. Enter the phone number of the CSM server: 303-590-0010
  12. Go to Login under Setup/Communications. Enter your Slate username and password. In the last field, Enter Startup Command, enter slip default for a SLIP connection or ppp default for a PPP connection. The table contains the information Chameleon needs to login to the terminal server and start the SLIP/PPP connection. It uses the unsername and password to login, then the command to initiate the SLIP/PPP connection.
  13. Go to Script Edit under Setup/Communications. Enter the the following script:
    name: $u$r word: $p$r > $c$r Your $- is $- -i
The script contains only single spaces. Chameleon may not work if the script entry is not exact. Early versions of Chameleon may not have the “$-“ command. Those versions will not allow access to the CSM computing resources. You should use the most recent version of Chameleon and read the accompanying documentation for script and how the scripting commands work.
  14. Select Save under the File menu to save the configuration you just entered.
  15. To be certain that all information is correctly loaded, exit from “Custom” and then restart it.
  16. Once the connection has been correctly configured, you can connect to a CSM Computing Center terminal server simply by hitting Connect on the menu bar. Should there be a problem, the connection log will provide a clue to the source of the problem.

Additional Information

The DNS system works using a manual connection. You will want to use the nameserver, so do not use Dial on Demand.

You should notice no difference between CSLIP and PPP. To change from one to the other, change the interface type under Setup/Interface and change the command under Setup/Communications/Login. The PPP interface provides a more robust communications interface, but it is not necessary for remote dial-up access.
