Configuring your Modem and Windows 3.X for Dial-Up Access Using Trumpet Winsock SLIP/PPP Protocols
This document describes how to configure your copy of Trumpet Winsock to use PPP on the CSMCC 56K modem lines. When you dial in to 303-590-0010 using Trumpet Winsock on Windows 3.x, you will be dynamically assigned a temporary IP address to use for the duration of your dial-in session.
Do not make any changes on your computer until you have read this entire document! For answers to software-specific questions, you should consult the documentation included with your software. This document is provided to assist you in connecting with the Colorado School of Mines 56K modems only. These are generic instructions only. Your system configuration will likely be different; therefore, adaptations may be necessary.
To use this document, you should have the following:
- A computer with Windows 3.X installed and running properly.
- A computer which meets all of the Trumpet system requirements.
- The latest version of Trumpet installed to the directory c:\trumpet.
Create a directory on your C: drive called trumpet. Copy all of the files from the diskette on which you have Trumpet to this directory. Go to the trumpet directory and run the file twsk21f.exe. Example: c:\trumpet\twsk21f.exe. Example: c:\trumpet\twsk21f
IMPORTANT: When asked if you wish to overwrite login.com, you MUST answer no.
- A modem and phone line for SLIP/PPP use.
Instructions:
- To start Trumpet the first time, in Windows, go to File and Run. Run the file c\trumpet\tcpman.exe. Then go to File and Setup and continue as follows.
- Change the IP Address to 138.67.255.255. This is a "dummy" address; it will dynamically change when you connect.
- Make certain that the option Internal SLIP near the middle, left side of the window is clicked off for the next two instructions. Otherwise the Setup window will not allow you to change the Netmask or Default Gateway options.
- Netmask should be set to 255.255.192.0.
- Default Gateway should be set to 138.67.1.1.
- Click on the Internal PPP option near the middle, left side of the window. It should be displaying an "X" in the option’s box.
- Change the value for Name Server to 138.67.1.2.
- We do not have a local time server so leave Time Server blank.
- Enter mines.edu under Domain Suffix.
- Near the bottom, left side enter the port through which your modem is communicating for the Slip Port. Often this will be port 2, but may be port 1 as well.
- Enter the maximum speed allowed by your modem under Baud Rate (e.g., 19200).
- Make sure the Hardware Handshake option is selected.
- DO NOT select the Van Jacobson CSLIP compression option.
- You should leave all other settings at their default values. (For example, do NOT enter anything under the file-->PPP Options settings in Trumpet--you do NOT want to check the PAP box or enter your userid and password here--they should all be blank (default value).) Do not change these values unless you are certain you know what you are doing.
Additional Information
In order for Trumpet to use PPP, it must have a script file that tells it, in detail, how to connect to the server. See Rich Ferris in GC220 or send e-mail to him at rferris@mines.edu for information about the script file.
