Creating Accounts for CSM AC&N PC Labs, Macintosh Lab and email cluster (central Unix)

To create an account:

  1. Use any PC in the Academic and Computing Networking (AC&N) labs
  2. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the user login screen
  3. Type newuser at the "User Name" prompt. DO NOT enter a password.
  4. Press the Enter key to bring up the NewUser program.
  5. Enter your user name where requested. Your user name is on the left side of the EKey mailer you received in the mail. If you did not receive a EKey card, go to the AC&N front desk to have an EKey issued to you.
  6. Press the Tab key to move to the next blank
  7. If your user name was found in the CSM database, your full name will be displayed immediately below your user name. If not, contact a student consultant or a member of the Front Desk staff.
  8. Enter your EKey code and then press the Tab key.
  9. If the EKey code is entered correctly, the cursor will move to the next blank when you press the Tab key. If not, try again.
  10. At the "Passwords for the PCs" prompt, enter your password. Create a good password! A poorly constructed password can result in your account being accessed by someone else and/or deactivated by the AC&N staff. Use different passwords for each of your accounts.
  11. Press the Tab key.
  12. If the password is accepted, the cursor will move down to the next box after you press the Tab key. If not, you will be asked to type in a different password.
  13. Once the password is accepted, you will be asked to re-enter it. Type it again and press Tab.
  14. If the two password entries do not match, you will be asked to repeat the password entry steps. If the entries do match, a screen will appear with the question, "Do you want to add this user?" Click on Yes. A DOS screen should appear with information about the creation of your account.
  15. Follow the directions on the DOS screen and click "OK" on the message that appears upon completion. It takes approximately 15 minutes for your account to be activated. This account is for the PCs in the AC&N, CTLM, Writing Center and Library labs. Academic departments administer their own accounts for the department labs.
  16. You must continue with the following steps to create a cluster account. The cluster account provides access to e-mail. The AC&N account you created using the process above will be disabled if you cannot be contacted via e-mail concerning the account.

If you have problems with the process outlined in this guide, check with a staff member at the Front Desk or one of the student consultants (look for a blue vest). If you have e-mail access through another provider, you can send questions to support@mines.edu.

To create a cluster (email) account:

Your cluster account is required to use Mines e-mail, create a personal home page, use campus modem pools, Unix systems, and other academic web services. You should activate this account via the web and start using it now to help you become familiar with our services and resources. You should use your Mines e-mail address for school-related correspondence. The Financial Aid office and others will send certain types of e-mail only to Mines e-mail addresses. We will be unable to assist you if you have difficulties receiving assignments or other CSM-related e-mail at a non-Mines address.

You need the User Name assigned to you by Academic Computing & Networking and your EKey to create your cluster (e-mail) account. Open your web browser to

http://newuser.mines.edu/

Enter the information requested and press the Create Account button. Your account should be active within a few minutes, but your authorization to use campus modem pools may not be active for up to one hour. You can test your account by going to

http://webmail.mines.edu/

Login with your username and the password you created and send an e-mail message to yourself.

Command line alternative to create your cluster account. (if you can't, or don't want to use the method above)

  1. Start up your secure shell client. (PuTTY is available in Computing Center labs and can be downloaded for personal use.  Check our secure shell page for more information.  Be sure to choose ssh, port 22 - use telnet only if necessary)
  2. Connect to imagine.mines.edu.. (default configurations usually work, use vt100 emulation)
  3. At the login prompt, type newuser and press enter.
  4. You will be asked for your username. Enter the username printed on the left of your EKey card.
  5. If your username is recognized, you will be instructed to enter your EKey.
  6. Enter the EKey from your card. (EKeys are case sensitive, do not use the numeric keypad)
  7. If your EKey was entered correctly, you will be asked to create a password.  Make up a good one – you should have read the information on the web by now!
  8. Enter the password (it won’t display on the screen) you have created and press enter.
  9. Reenterthe password you created when asked and press enter.
  10. If the passwords entered match, you’ll get a message indicating your account has been activated.
Note: Your account should now be active.  Authorization to use campus modem pools, however, will not occur for approximately 30 minutes.

To create a CSM CC Macintosh account:

A Macintosh account is not required to use AC&N services, but is required to login to the Macintoshes in CT156.
