Spam Management Services for "@mines.edu" Addresses

Unsolicited commercial email, commonly known as spam, has been a frustrating, and growing, problem for most everyone who uses electronic mail. Academic Computing & Networking (AC&N) has implemented a system-wide solution that identifies suspected spam with subject line tags and offers the opportunity to prevent delivery of messages that are marked as a high probability of being spam by quarantining them on a separate spam filtering server. As outlined in this message to the campus, the system is being phased in beginning on March 3, 2004. There are currently no plans to discontinue the opt-in spamassassin offering on slate, which provides more user control but is somewhat more difficult to tune for those unfamiliar with Unix. Current users can use spamassassin in addition to the new service or will have the option of turning off the default spam filtering in phase two of the implementation. Please see the links below for more information about spam and how to use these new resources.

Spam Management Tips
Be cautious about using unsubscribe options in spam messages you receive. Sometimes the options to get off a list are legitimate but other times you are just confirming to the sender that your address is real and you might end up receiving even more spam.

Create different email addresses through public providers to use for purchasing products, interacting with vendors, mailing lists, etc.. Use your primary or personal address that you want to keep long term only for contact with individuals such as family, friends, or appropriate business associates.

Setup spam filtering and develop a routine for managing and deleting it.
