VPN Client Quick Start

I. Download The Client

II. Configure The Client Once you have downloaded installed the VPN Client you need to configure it. The simplest way to configure the client is to download the pre-configured connection profile from this web page. If you don't want to use the pre-configured profile you can create your own by following the instructions given below.

Option 1: Downloading and installing the pre-configured profile

  1. Download the profile (.pcf) and save it to your local disk ( click here). If you are using the GUI client (Windows/MAC) use the IMPORT tab to load the profile into your client.
  2. If you are using the command line (Solaris/Linux) client, copy the .pcf file to the profile directory, which is usually /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles.

Option 2: Configure the client by hand If you are using the GUI client select "New", if you are using the command line client make a copy of the sample.pcf file that is in the Profiles directory. Use the following values to configure the profile:

  • Host: vpn.mines.edu
  • Authentication type is: "group"
  • The group name is: "CSM"
  • The group password: "CSMRocks"
  • If you are behind a NAT device you need to enable Transparent Tunneling. CSM's concentrator supports either UPD or TCP tunneling.
  • Most users will want to select Allow Local LAN Access

III. Connecting to the concentrator

  • If you are using the GUI client, you can select the connection profile and click connect. When prompted provide your slate (i.e. email) username and password.
  • If you are using the command line client, type the command "vpnclient connect CSM". When prompted provide your slate (i.e. email) username and password. Once you are connected the VPN Client will NOT return you to the command prompt.

IV. Additional information Detailed users guides are available in PDF format.
