Sending mail using Microsoft Outlook (NOT Express) from off campus using vpn.mines.edu

This Tutorial assumes that you have set up receiving Mines e-mail from off campus.

Open Outlook and select Tools -> E-mail Accounts... as in Figure 1.

Select "View or change existing e-mail accounts" and click "Next" as in Figure 2.

Select your mines.edu account and click "Change"

- IMAP and POP are two different ways of receiving mail, there are subtle differences between these two ways, but they don't differ when sending mail.

Fill in the information as shown in figure 4.

- Most of this information stays the same.
- Outgoing mail server is the most important setting for this procedure.
- Then click More Settings.

Select the "Outgoing Server" tab

- Check "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication"
- Click on the radio dial "Use same settings as my incoming mail server"

Select the "Advanced" tab

- Check "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)" for both Incoming and Outgoing servers.
- Change the port for Outgoing server(SMTP) to be "988"
- Click OK
- That is it, Click "Next" and "Finish" and you should be able to send any newly composed email via the vpn.
- Note: messages in the outbox will have to be recomposed or sent using other means. Microsoft has already hard coded what email server to use for those messages.
