Campus housing network access, along with other computing, networking, and information resources at CSM, is provided to support academic work while a student is enrolled at Mines. Students using the network must agree to CSM's policies for resource usage to receive access to resources, including a campus housing network connection. While some personal and recreational use of resources is permitted, academic work always takes precedence. Use of the campus housing network, even through a personally owned computer, for financial gain (personal or commercial) is strictly prohibited. The network cannot be used for any consulting or business-related work for which there will be payment. If access is needed for external business activity, it should be provided through a contract with a commercial Internet Service Provider.
The purpose of the campus housing network is to enable students to connect personal resources to the CSM network. Some of the policies and expectations summarized below may seem severe. They are put in place to protect the student as well as CSM. Connecting to the campus network through the campus housing connection carries with it serious responsibilities.
Terms and Conditions
Students agree to:
- Use the network responsibly by respecting equipment, resources, and other users.
- Assume financial responsibility for damage caused to wallplates, wiring, or electronics in their assigned rooms or other areas of campus housing.
- Use physical wiring and connectors provided through campus housing management or officially sanctioned by the CSM Computing Center and not to connect hubs or create extended networks.
- Configure and connect equipment to the network only as authorized and instructed by Computing Center personnel through campus housing management.
- Cease using any software or disconnect equipment that, in the judgment of CSM Computing Center personnel 1) appears to interfere with the performance of the network, 2) appears to generate excessive traffic loads, or 3) appears to interfere with the ability of other residents to effectively use the network, or 4) appears to create a security risk for CSM.
- Provide supervised access to network-connected personal computer systems to assist Computing Center personnel diagnose various network-related problems.
- Respect the privacy of other network users. Attempting to "sniff" the network or capture transmissions bound for other systems will result in the termination of the owner's account. Unauthorized access through the network to any campus computer system, computers owned by other residents, or computer systems outside of CSM will result in the termination of the owner's connection and possible disciplinary or legal action.
- Observe and respect copyright and all other laws and policies. Copying software and data without license or authority is a serious offense. Using software licensed for academic use to generate income is a violation of license agreements. Harassing others by any means through the campus network or the Internet may lead to disciplinary action or criminal charges.
- Keep passwords and authorization mechanisms provided by CSM private and secure. Providing access to others through a personal account or sharing access codes with roommates, friends, or even family, violates policy and can lead to disciplinary action. Each individual is responsible for activity or transmissions that originate from a personal account or computer.
- Install virus protection software on your computer and keep the software versions and virus definition files up to date.
- Take all actions necessary to remove viruses from your computer which are spreading to others via CSM's network.
A member of the Computing Center staff may handle electronic mail that is not deliverable in an effort to complete delivery. If contents are not encrypted, the content may be viewed by a staff member. E-mail, disk files, and network transmissions, though protected by security mechanisms, are not private. They may be examined by Computing Center staff to evaluate system or network or load problems or for some similar reason, or if there is reason to believe that accounts or systems have been compromised or involved in a violation of policy or law.
Students who wish to use the campus housing network will be asked to sign a copy of the above agreement.
When a student moves from one room to another, a form requesting a network port disconnect in the original room must be submitted. A new Agreement form will then be executed for connection in the new room location.
