Software

Introduction

The user community at the Colorado School of Mines has access to a wealth of software in support of the academic mission here. Individual academic departments and research centers and institutes maintain labs with specialized software for use by people associated with them. Computing and Networking maintains computer labs and remotely accessible computing resources with both general purpose and specialized software available to the campus at large -- see the Facilities and Resources page

Some of the software we have obtained is available to the CSM community for installation and use on machines other than ours for low or no cost.

Licensing restrictions vary by product. A typical restriction is that it is to be installed on a campus owned and campus located machine for use by CSM affiliated people in support of instruction (i.e., not on personally owned machines, or at home, or in support of commercial activities or funded research). Some are more liberal (our AntiVirus software is available, without charge, by faculty, staff and students for home use and on personally owned machines, for example), and some more restrictive or costly. Check below for details. The brief summaries presented here are intended as a concise outline of our understanding of the major points of our licenses, and do not override the legal documents that are in place.

A good place to start when inquiring about installation of this software is Academic Department Support Services, if your department is among those they support. They may already have media and licensing, or know whom to refer you to. Otherwise, visit the Central Computing Support Helpdesk or otherwise contact us.

Commercial Software we do not currently have site- or volume-licensed

These items of software that we have in use in our labs are sometimes requested, but we do not currently have a site license or volume discount arrangement with the vendor that we are able to pass on to the CSM community at large. We suggest you make use of the software where it is available in our labs, or contact either the vendor of the particular item or vendors of software to educational users who may be able to offer you a discount. Sometimes an individual department or research group may have a license they can give you access to if you are affiliated with them.
