A Technology Fee Committee, consisting of five students, five faculty, and a faculty chairperson that votes only in the event of a tie, solicits, reviews and selects proposals to fund. Proposals are submitted each semester by academic departments/programs and recognized student organizations on campus. Documents relating to technology fee guidelines and proposals are available through the technology fee web page (CSM Home Page->Academic Affairs->Technology Fee Committee) or from the Computing Center.
Nineteen proposals were submitted requesting a total of $445,176 for Fall semester, 1999. Sixteen proposals were awarded full or partial funding totaling $253,176 as listed above. Any student or faculty member wishing to read the proposals submitted through the current semester may do so weekdays between 8am and 5pm at the Computing Center by making arrangements with Marge Arnold (x3433; marnold@mines.edu).
| #1 | The Computing Center requested $3,330 to upgrade the student CGI server to a newer system since the current one is so slow. This proposal was not funded with suggestions made to purchase one of the RS6000/43P systems that will become available when CR upgrades their undergraduate student lab. |
| #2 | The Mining Department requested $12,035 toward the purchase of 4 lab PCs, 2 permanently mounted and 1 portable computer projection system. $12,500 was awarded with the stipulation that slightly better projectors than those specified be purchased. |
| #3 | The Chemical Engineering department requested $21,000 toward the rewiring of the third floor of Alderson Hall. $12,500 of the request was funded. |
| #4 | MME requested $8,216 as part of a $344,915 project which has largely been implemented. These funds would reimburse the department for the purchase of 3 Pentium III 500Mhz systems, 1 21 inch monitor, 2 19 inch monitors, all attached to several peices of laboratory equipment, and one HP882C printer. During the Fall 1999 technology fee award cycle, the committee indicated to MME they would entertain a proposal for reimbursement due to timing difficulties with donations and completion of the new building. $8,000 in funding was awarded. |
| #5 | MME requested $31,900 toward converting Hill Hall 202 and 209 into "smart classrooms." The committee considered funding one room at this time but questioned some costs and felt that these should be reconsidered at a later date, after the upgrade of Coolbaugh 209. The chair had to break a tie vote on funding one room. This proposal was not funded. |
| #6 | Graduate students from the Chemistry and Geochemistry department requested $6,744 toward the total purchase price of $10,244 of 5 computers and supplies for graduate student use. The committee awarded $9,000 on the condition that 8 total computers be acquired, two for each graduate student shared office space, and that none of these computers be placed in the "lab" area. Also, four printers are to be purchased (one for each office). The Computing Center will also add the additional switch necessary to connect the network ports in the offices. |
| #7 | LAIS requested $13,250 toward the acquisition of equipment for data and video projection and audio for Coolbaugh 209. This is a large lecture hall requiring a high end projector. $12,500 in matching funds has already been awarded from the classroom equipment budget. The committee awarded $17,250 with the instructions that the higher-end projector be purchased. |
| #8 | The Computing Center requested $19,643 to purchase a server and software to provide a web-based e-mail service for the campus. The committee was somewhat reluctant to fund the proposal because some of the software has not yet been released. The Computing Center wishes to have a system running by the end of Spring semester, however, so it will be available to students who are away for the summer. All of the funds will not be spent if a grant is received to acquire the software. Since two software packages were being considered, the committee awarded funding of $11,000 toward the lower-cost software (non-grantable) software and a server. |
| #9 | The Chemical Engineering department requested $65,208 toward the acquision of 22 high-end NT-based computer systems for their undergraduate computer laboratory. The committee did not understand the need for dual-processors. $34,000 was awarded to this project at this time. |
| #10 | The CSM Astronomy Club requested $8,230 to purchase hardware and swoftware for the telescope's main computer as well as materials for the construction of a better mount for the large telescope. The committee felt that the motorized mount requested was too much at this time and that everything else should get up and running . Therefore the committee awarded $3,230 for all items except the motorized mount. |
| #11 | The Graduate Student Association requested $10,634 for a projector and laptop to check out to graduate students by the GSA. Concerns were expressed by committee members about use being restricted to graduate students, though they should have priority. The committee awarded $10,000 for the purchase of a laptop and projector, however, they are to be administered by the Computing Center with graduate students being able to reserve more than 24 hours in advance and others only within 24 hours when available and for use during a single day only.. |
| #12 | The Petroleum Engineering department requested $13,936 toward the purchase of 5 computers, software, and an additional network switch. The Committee awarded $10,000 toward the purchase of the computers and a network switch. |
| #13 | The department of Mathematical and Computer Sciences requested $28,833 toward the purchase of equipment for an advanced networked computing lab. These funds would help to match a 3-year NSF award of $90,000. The committee strongly supported this proposal but felt that most matching funds were being provided by the institution from other souces and awarded $7,500 to this project. |
| #14 | The Physics department requested $34,830 to purchase of 12 PCs, 12 digital scopes, and 2 printers to enhance the Introductory Physics laboratories. The committe awarded $34,000 to support this proposal. |
| #15 | The Physics department requested $43,592 toward the purchase of digital oscilloscopes, digital to analog data translation interface boards, instrumentation modules, and other computer-based interfaces for the electronics and advance physics labs. The committee felt that, although the equipment would clearly be helpful, this was a large request that benefitted a relatively small number of students. The committee suggested that a demonstration project be done with a future proposal summarizing the results. No funding was awarded at this time. |
| #16 | The Chemistry and Geochemistry department requested $4,500 toward the purchase of a new computer and software for the Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) instrument which is used in sophomore through graduate-level CGC courses. $4,000 was awarded to this project. |
| #17 | Mines Activity Council request $1,177 for a new computer for the student office. The computer is used by members of the MAC executive board and various event and club committees. The committee felt that MAC should not spend their remaining budget to help fund the computer and awarded full funding of $1,700 to the proposal. |
| #18 | The Engineering division requested $87,593 toward the purchase of 25 computers, and software for the engineering computer classroom, a UPS system, MATLAB license renewal, and 8 mixed signal oscilloscopes. $59,184 was awarded toward the purchase of the computers and oscilloscopes. |
| #19 | The Geology department requested $30,555 to purchase 5 computers for the student PC lab, 1 laptop computer, 2 projectors, and 1 21" monitor. The committee felt the lab computers are not old enough to replace yet. $19,312 was awarded to fund two projectors (1 permanently mounted), 1 laptop, and the 21" monitor. |
