Video Conferencing

Location
Our CODEC (compression/decompresion) equipment (including microphone, video cameras and video displays) is limited to use in CT148, which seats 8 comfortably, but will hold approximately 20 with seats around the edge of the room.

Both the room and equipment need to be reserved in advance in order to fit in with the other uses of the room. Please open a ticket at the Mines Help Center for both. We prefer to arrange a test connection with the remote site prior to any scheduled video conference in order to work out any bugs without interfering with actual conference time. Please have contact information for the remote site available when you contact us to arrange a conference.

We do NOT have bridging capability, so we cannot originate a conference to multiple sites.

Connection Range
Video conferencing reach is worldwide. We have connected clients at Mines to locations in China, New Zealand, Columbia, England, Chile and Canada as well as multiple sites in the U.S.

How does video conferencing work?
Video conferencing uses two-way interactive video. Room equipment compresses the analog audio-video signal into a digital signal and sends it over the connection. The signal is received at the other end and decompressed into an analog signal and displayed. Technology allows transmission of full motion video, audio, and still pictures.

Mines uses two types of video conferencing: ISDN and IP

ISDN Video
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) video uses telephone lines to make a video conference connection.

IP Video
IP (Internet Protocol) video uses the Internet to make a video connection. CSM is a member of the Internet 2 consortium, so IP video connections to other Internet 2 institutions are of high quality and relatively immune to network congestion.

Equipment
We have a Polycom ViewStation with the capability of connecting either via ISDN (up to 384kps) or IP (H.323). Additional equipment which may be used in conjuction with the video conference equipment:

  • Document Camera (Elmo) - for showing paper documents for a video conference. (Provided by AC & N.)
  • VCR - to record a conference (provided by AC & N); you must provide the VHS tape.
  • laptop with S-video connector - to show a PowerPoint or similar presentation for a video conference. (AC & N will provide the connecting cable.)

Costs:

  • Academic use - Free, but long distance charges may apply.
  • Non-Academic/Outside use - to be determined.
