UPDATED EMERGENCY EMAIL OUTAGE TONIGHT FROM 5PM TO 11PM, April 7, 2008

The goal of this maintenance was to move 5 volumes from the SAN clusters 0 and 1 to cluster 2. Unfortunately, we discovered hardware problems on Friday evening and ended up working on that until almost 1:30am on Saturday. Tonight at 5:00pm, we are going to try again to move the volumes. This configuration change is being made to address bottlenecks on the SAN so that we do not have the mail system grinding to a halt like it did around 10:15am this morning.

Shell service on Imagine and Email service via smtp.mines.edu, pop.mines.edu and imap.mines.edu will be unavailable starting at 5:00pm. The system will return to service as soon as possible, which is expected to be no later then 9:00pm.

Updated: expected time of completion: 11:00pm

Approximately half of the hornet Z: drive (home and profile space) on the ADIT domain was lost due to a double disk failure that occurred at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, April 21, 2007. Lost data was reloaded from backup tapes beginning Saturday morning, April 21, 2007; the last block of users was up at 12:25 a.m. Monday morning, April 23, 2007.

Users whose home and profile space resided on User.1/Profiles.1, Users.2/Profiles.2, or Users.3/Profiles.3 were effected.

All except for certain user portions of Users.1 have been restored from the full backup which ran Friday night; the backup started Friday at 10:45 p.m. and ended with the disk failure Saturday at 8:00 a.m.). The exceptions are directories in Users.1\m\ through Users.1\n\ through Users.1\z\ that have been restored from the previous weeks' full & incrementals, ending with the incremental that ran between 7:00 p.m. and 10:45 p.m. Friday night.

[January 3, 2007] AC&N Scheduled Outage: Campus E-Mail Services 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, January 6, 2007

The inclement weather of the past two weeks has prevented AC&N from completing scheduled upgrades and the addition of new resources to the campus e-mail cluster. This work needs to be complete prior to the start of the semester and will require a campus wide e-mail outage.

E-mail services will be unavailable beginning Saturday, January 6, 2007, at 6:00 a.m. We expect the outage to last a minimum of eight hours and have scheduled twelve hours. Services will, of course, be restored to production as early as possible.

During the outage all e-mail services depending on the cluster will be unavailable (pop.mines.edu, imap.mines.edu, smtp.mines.edu, mail.mines.edu, and webmail). E-mail passing through the cluster will be delayed until services are restored. Additionally no access will be available to the cluster host imagine.mines.edu.

E-mail will not be lost, just delayed.

If you have any questions, please contact AC&N via support@mines.edu

AC&N - WINTER BREAK SCHEDULE
December 16, 2006 through January 9, 2007
Green Center and CTLM

AC&N has posted the Winter Break Schedule for both the Green Center and CTLM. Please follow this LINK to see the current schedule.

[December 27, 2006] UPDATE - Campus E-Mail Services on December 25th, 26th, and 28th

AC&N Scheduled Outages: Campus E-Mail Services on December 25th, 26th, and 28th has been modified!

The December 28th downtime is being rescheduled for the first week in January, 2007. Specific details will be posted here when they are available.

Please check here for further details in the next week.

[December 18, 2006] Campus E-Mail Services on December 25th, 26th, and 28th

AC&N Scheduled Outages: Campus E-Mail Services on December 25th, 26th, and 28th

AC&N is adding additional resources (servers, network storage modules, (NSMs), and an additional network switch) to the campus e-mail server cluster, upgrading the servers' operating systems, and upgrading the NSM firmware on the NSMs. The nature of the work is such that it will require that the e-mail cluster be taken down. The bulk of the work has been scheduled to be done over Winter Break while the School of Mines is closed. We hope this schedule will minimize the impact the outages will have on the Mines community. We do understand that there will still be an impact and ask for your patience. The work is essential in addressing the continued growth in Mines' e-mail usage.

E-mail services will be unavailable beginning at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, December 25, 2006, and will continue into Tuesday evening, December 26, 2006. A second outage will start at 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 28, 2006, and will continue into the afternoon and possibly early evening. E-mail services will be returned to production status as soon as possible in both cases.

During this time all e-mail services depending on the cluster will be unavailable (pop.mines.edu, imap.mines.edu, smtp.mines.edu, mail.mines.edu, and webmail). No e-mail will arrive from off campus and no e-mail will be relayed to either on campus or off campus addresses. Additionally no access will be available to the cluster host imagine.mines.edu.

E-mail will not be lost, just delayed.

If you have any questions, please contact AC&N via support@mines.edu

  • If you use "imap", verify that your incoming mail server is set to imap.mines.edu (not slate, not just mines.edu)
  • My server settings appear to be correct but I am still connecting to the old server. Why?

AC&N - WINTER BREAK SCHEDULE
December 17, 2005 through January 11, 2006
Green Center and CTLM

AC&N has posted the Winter Break Schedule for both the Green Center and CTLM. Please follow this LINK to see the current schedule.

AC&N Network Maintenance
Tuesday, December 27 and Wednesday, December 28, 2005

AC&N will be performing network maintenance on Tuesday December 27th and Wednesday December 28th. The most significant impact will be Tuesday morning when we upgrade core network equipment. During this time (expected to be 8:00am to 12:00 on the 27th) there will be periods of time when routing will be shutdown resulting in a loss of connectivity to the Internet as well as networks on-campus protected by the firewall.

Other outages will include:

- Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday; switch and server upgrades resulting in brief outages throughout campus.

- Tuesday afternoon; upgrade of Green Center equipment resulting in significant downtime for the north half of the building.

- Tuesday afternoon; Upgrade of equipment in the Heating Plant resulting in a 1 hour outage in that building.

- Upgrade of DNS server, resulting in slow DNS response.

AC&N CSMCC Domain Scheduled Downtime
Tuesday, December 20, 2005

The CSMCC domain file server, hornet, will be down for maintenance beginning Tuesday, December 20, 2005. Work should be completed in a single day, however, we are reserving Wednesday to address any unforeseen complications. During the maintenance there will be no access to the CSMCC home and profile space and you will not be able to login from general labs in the Green Center, CTLM, and Library. We understand that some users may be inconvenienced and we will try to get the work done as quickly as possible.

Please contact support@mines.edu if you have any questions.

Thank you,
