Educational Rock, Fossil, & Mineral Kits

The Museum offers three types of hands-on educational kits which are loaned to the public for a period of no more than 3 weeks. A refundable deposit of $50 is required for checkout.

If all material is returned to the museum properly (nothing is missing or broken) and the kit is returned on time (no exceptions) the full deposit is given back. If something is damaged or missing or the kit is returned late that amount will be deducted from the deposit according to the prices provided on the contract.  We accept cash (exact amount only) or check. We DO NOT accept credit cards. Checks should be made out to “CSM Geology Museum.”

Kits can be reserved in advance, either in person or over the phone.  They can
be picked up or dropped of during REGULAR BUSINESS HOURS ONLY.  Finally, we do not mail kits, and the teacher (or a representative) must pick the kit up in person.

Rock and Mineral Classroom Kits ($50 deposit):  These kits are ideal for
classrooms learning about the rock cycle and/or mineral properties. In
particular, the classroom kits were specifically designed to address the State of Colorado geoscience standards for 4th and 6th grade. It includes a wide
variety of minerals such as quartz, calcite and pyrite as well as many common
igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks such as granite, sandstone, and
marble. 15 pieces of each specimen are provided making this kit ideal for
medium to large sized groups (about 10 - 30 students).  Equipment such as magnets, hand lenses and HCl are provided. Finally, an activity guide book and
an educational video are included to assist the teacher. These are our most frequently checked out kits.

Fossil Kits ($50 deposit):  Fossil kits are designed to teach students about
fossils and geologic history.  This kit is more appropriate for a junior high to high school level. These kits include fossils of teeth, claws, plants, etc. A guide book is provided which explains the fossils included in the kit. A collection of worksheets is also provided, which the teacher may photocopy and distribute to the students.

Teaching Trunks ($50 deposit):  Teaching Trunks cover a wide range of geologic concepts including the rock cycle, mineral properties, fossils, crystallography, birthstones/gemstones, etc. However, because there is only one sample of each specimen, it is ideal for smaller groups, such as small
boy/girl scout troops (less than 10 students). This teaching trunk is more
appropriate for single day “show and tell” lectures or for younger aged
(kindergarten - 2nd grade) students.
