GEME PROGRAM

The GEME Program

“...GEMEs develop the necessary skills to adapt to varying work conditions and mature faster in their understanding of mining operations in global settings. With the added experiences, they will have the ability and skills to step onto the fast track to management positions while wielding a
global view of the industry...”

GEME Program Requirements

The GEME mining engineering departments accept applications to the GEME program from students who have completed their basic engineering and science courses in mining engineering or another engineering discipline. To qualify for the GEME program, the candidates need to be in a mining engineering program and meet certain requirements, which includes a minimum academic standing as determined by the mining engineering departments.

Since GEME students are to attend classes for a semester at a host university, they must be proficient in the language of the host country. Should they have a deficiency, they are expected to take language classes as part of their electives at their university or to attend an outside language school of their choice. When available, GEME students are expected to complete a short course at their home university offered by a Consortium professor visiting from a foreign university. Additionally, GEME students should complete their internships abroad, depending on the work permit requirements of the host country.

The GEME program is run without affecting the structures and curricula of the participating universities. The academic workload of a GEME student while studying abroad remains the same as at their home university. When the students meet the graduation requirements, they receive their degree from their home universities. Back To Top

GEME Student Support

The GEME program provides funds for GEME students to travel abroad and study as exchange students. The funds cover air travel, accommodation, and living expenses at the host university. The actual amounts vary from 5000 to 8000 USD depending on the cost of living in the host country. Exchange students do not pay tuition at their host university, however, they do continue paying their regular tuition at their home university.

GEME students may be awarded fellowships at an escalating level as they progress with their studies. The amounts vary (500 to 1000 USD per semester) depending on the tuition fees and living expenses at different universities and countries.

The scholarships are renewed on a per semester basis. The students continue to receive their scholarship as long as they remain eligible for the GEME program in terms of performing the required activities of the program, i.e. learning a foreign language, being an exchange student, attending a GEME professor's short course, maintaining a high academic standing, and working as an intern at a mine abroad (where applicable). Administration of the GEME Program

Currently, the GEME program activities are coordinated by a program coordinator and an assistant at the Colorado School of Mines. As the program matures, individual member universities will adopt more responsibilities involved in running the program.

An Advisory Board consisting of representatives from both industry and academia will oversee the GEME activities. This allows for the open exchange of ideas between industry, educators, students, and researchers in a single setting of the Advisory Board meetings. Back To Top

The GEME program presents opportunities for students to gain first hand experience within a wide variety of mining applications worldwide.
