MNGN410 - Excavation Project Management

Catalog Description:

Successful implementation and management of surface and underground construction projects, preparation of contract documents, project bidding and estimating, contract awarding and notice to proceed, value engineering, risk management, construction management and dispute resolution, evaluation of differing site conditions claims.  2 semester hours.

           

Prerequisites: 

MNGN21, Introduction to Mining, or instructors consent.

 

Textbook and/or other required material:

Hatem, David J, “Subsurface Conditions, Risk Management for Design and Construction Management Professionals”. (Recommended)

Brierley, Gary S., Hatem, David J, “Design-Build Subsurface Projects”.  (Recommended).

 

Course Objectives:

Provide students with an in-depth understanding of the issues involved in the successful management of surface and underground excavation projects.  Review the current techniques used in project bidding, cost estimating, scheduling and value engineering.  Provide an understanding and appreciation of dispute avoidance and resolutions, client, engineer and contractor selection processes.

           

Class/Laboratory Schedule:

2 hour lecture, once a week.

 

Contribution of Course to Meeting Professional Component:

This course contributes two credit hours to engineering science.
