Admissions Requirements for Domestic Students

The following documents must be submitted to the Graduate Office along with the Application for Admission:

  • Two official sets of transcripts from all previous colleges

  • Three letters of recommendation (*PDF file)

  • GRE test scores (Institution code: 4073)
Most graduate degree programs at Mines require completion of a standardize test as part of the admissions process. The most commonly used standardized test is the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

We accept GRE scores from tests taken within the past five years. After five years, ETS will no longer send scores. We will accept a copy of the original score report if you have it, however the department may request that you retake the test once your application has gone to review.

  • GMAT test scores
The division of Economics and Business also accepts scores from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) in place of GRE scores.

Check the academic program pages to determine if the program you are applying to requires the GRE or GMAT. Students applying to the Physics (MS or PhD) program and applying for financial aid must submit general and Physics subject test scores. If you are not applying for aid within the Physics department, you are only required to submit general GRE scores.)

  • Statement of goals
The purpose of the statement of goals is to introduce yourself to the Graduate Admissions Review Committee. In the Statement, you should address professional and personal goals, as well as why Colorado School of Mines would be the best place to achieve those goals. It is typically about one page in length.

  • Resume

  • $50 online/$100 paper application fee
The non-refundable application fee is required of all applicants. If completing the paper application, please send a check made payable to "CSM Graduate School" to the address listed below. Applications will not be processed until the fee is received. Please note: Our online application will only accept fees paid by credit card or electronic check.

Send all supplemental materials to:
Colorado School of Mines Graduate School
1500 Illinois St.
Golden, Colorado USA 80401-1887

In order to speed up the admissions review process, copies of test scores and transcripts will be accepted until official paperwork arrives. Official scores and transcripts are required for acceptance into the graduate programs.

Once the Graduate Office has received your application and application fee, you will receive a confirmation email or letter. Please allow at least two weeks for this confirmation email during our peak season (December through February). Once your application is processed you will receive another email notifying you of any missing credentials or paperwork that is holding up your application from being reviewed. You will then be notified when the completed application is sent to the department for review.
