Interdisciplinary Degrees

Interdisciplinary Degrees

CSM offers students the opportunity to earn research degrees which cannot be addressed solely within a single discipline or existing degree program. The Individualized Interdisciplinary Graduate Program (IIGP) allows students, along with their thesis committee, to outline a course of study from two departments or divisions at Mines that meets the individual student's needs. Upon completion of the program, the student is awarded the degree Interdisciplinary (M.S., M.E., or Ph.D.).

All interdisciplinary master's degrees require a minimum of 36 credit hours as well as the successful defense of a thesis or engineering report. PhD degrees require a minimum of 72 credit hours beyond the bachelor's degree as well as successful defense of a doctoral dissertation. Individual academic departments may require that a student fulfill additional degree requirements above and beyond those set by the Graduate School.

Admissions Process

  1. Before applying, prospective students should meet with the IIG Program Coordinator listed below to explore the match between their interdisciplinary interests and existing programs available on campus.
  2. The student must seek out faculty members willing to serve as co-advisors on the proposed project.
  3. In addition to the standard application package, an IIGP application will include a list of the potential thesis committee members, a summary of the proposed research and course of study, along with a justification for how this research and course of study fits with the Mines scope, mission, and resources. All application materials are submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies.
  4. Applications will be reviewed by the proposed participating academic departments, the IIG Coordinator and the IIG Studies Committee. Admissions decisions will be communicated to the student through the Office of Graduate Studies.
