I
am enjoying my time at Colorado School of Mines. As an emigrant
of Ireland, I was pleasantly surprised that this intimate school,
nestled in the foothills of the Rockies, boasts a strong international
contingent.
I attended Brown University, majoring in engineering
and economics. While working in electrical power engineering after
college, I gained exposure to energy management and trading. I resolved
to move towards the financial side of the industry and began researching
applied economics programs that would offer the right mix of qualitative
and quantitative elements. I struck gold when I discovered that
the mineral economics program at Mines was laden with quantitative
aspects and focused on the energy industry.

The strong emphasis on teaching mathematical methods
together with applied economics and policy studies assures me that
the graduate program produces students who are immediately capable
of excelling in the energy industry. Additionally, the close relationship
between The Colorado School of Mines and the National Renewable Energy
Laboratory leads me to believe that my studies could not be more ideally
located.
The CSM campus has a laid back feel belying the rigorous approach
to academics on which the college prides itself. However, the warmth
and support of the faculty is without a doubt the highlight of the
school. Their guidance will facilitate my plan to begin thesis research
in energy trading and risk management next semester.
The location of CSM is ideal for maximizing free
time. I enjoy competitive running and, as a committed snowboarder,
I also find an outlet on the Colorado slopes.
