Student Profile
John Akinboyewa
M.S. Candidate, Petroleum Engineering
Hometown: Lagos, Nigeria

I was born in Nigeria, then lived for a short while in London and then the United States.

I believe it's safe to say that I have gotten a good mix of culture throughout my life's schooling. I did my undergrad education here at Mines in Electrical Engineering and I'm now currently pursuing a master's degree in Petroleum Engineering.

I remember as a kid, I wanted to be a pilot, a doctor, an astronaut but as time went on, I developed a talent for circuits and programming. As I developed this "second-nature" in creating algorithm and interest in electronics, I leaned towards electrical engineering.

I went into industry for about a year but contemplated my return for a graduate degree.

For a while, I had also developed an interest in oil and gas exploration and production. Nigeria is blessed with many natural resources, a majority of which is crude oil reservoirs. With so much opporunity in starting an oil company back in Nigeria, I felt compelled to study petroleum engineering. The more I get involved with the subject, the more my interest and excitement about my career grows.

In addition, it really does help to get my degree from a department that's world-reknown in the subject. Having a very marketable degree in what I'm studying was a major factor in picking CSM for my grad school education. There's a much more "close-knit" group of professors with great understanding and talent for the material they teach. From world-reknown professors to incredible connection and ties with major players in the industry, the program has bridged the gap from education to professional development and job placement.

However, my interests don't end in the classroom. I enjoy playing sports and most of all, studying and making music. Creating and producing tracks for various artists has been my passion and served as relief from any educational/family stress.

My future goals include venturiung into the oil and gas business in Nigeria and maybe some day, own a US based music production company.
