Curriculum
As much as anything, at CSM we believe our approach to education is validated by the success of our alumni. In addition, our curriculum has been recognized nationally with a core course sequence common for all students and a major course sequence that is specific to each major area.
The Core Course Sequence
The CSM faculty is composed of more than 200 men and women from all over the world. Over 95% have a Ph.D. They conduct about $28 million of research each year.
Student/faculty ration is 15:1
They conduct about $28 million of research each year
Largest department is Engineering (civil, electrical, environmental, and mechanical specialties) with about 900 undergraduate students
Smallest department is Chemistry with about 41 undergraduate students
In 2001-2002, CSM awarded about 440 B.S. degrees, 140 M.S. degrees, and 40 Ph.D. degrees
Average undergraduate class has 35 students
Average Freshman class has 45 students
Smallest undergraduate class has 15 students
Largest undergraduate class has 200 students (These large lecture classes usually are broken into recitation classes of 15 to 20 students each week. If the lectures class has a lab, there are 20 to 25 students in each lab class)
The core course sequence is the same for all students. The core courses are designed to develop technical breadth, teamwork, communication skills, and an understanding of technology and its impact.

In mathematics and the basic sciences, you must complete 12 credit hours in calculus, three credit hours in differential equations, eight credit hours in chemistry, and nine credit hours in physics.

In design, the core course sequence requires six credit hours. You meet this requirement through Design-EPICS (Engineering Practices Introductory Course Sequence).

In systems, all students must complete Earth and Environmental Systems, Engineering Systems, and Human Systems. These three courses are designed to develop an understanding of how people, technology, and the environment interact.

In humanities and the social sciences, you must complete 10 credit hours in Nature and Human Values, Principles of Economics, and Human Systems. Human Systems is included in both the systems and the humanities and social science segments of the core course sequence. Click here to learn about additional requirements in humanities and social sciences.

In physical education, you must complete two credit hours taken in four separate semesters. Varsity athletics counts for physical education credit.

To help in the transition from high school to college, all freshmen are required to complete Freshman Success Seminar. This course introduces you to CSM, and our academic and social environment. Freshman Success Seminar also introduces you to your freshman advisor and is an important part of the CSM Faculty Mentor/Advising Program.

As part of the core course sequence, you must also complete nine credit hours of free electives. With some exceptions, your choice of courses is unrestricted and gives you an opportunity to develop minors and areas of special interest.
