Mines $25 Million Student Rec Center Opens

GOLDEN, Colo., Aug. 21, 2007 – The Colorado School of Mines community will celebrate the grand opening of the new 108,000-square-foot Student Recreation Center on Aug. 31 at 3 p.m. The Rec Center is located on the campus in Golden at the intersection of Maple and 16th Streets, just south of the Ben H. Parker Student Center.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature remarks by Dr. Harold Cheuvront, vice president for student life, and Mines President M.W. “Bill” Scoggins.

Other opening activities include Mines varsity volleyball matches, chair massages, drop-in fitness classes, aquatics activities, a performance by the Mines Band and an appearance by mascot Marv the Miner.

The new facility features the 2,500-seat Lockridge Arena – named for donors John Lockridge, a 1952 graduate of the School, and his wife Erika – for varsity basketball and volleyball games as well as special events and other sports activities.

The building serves as the new home of the Mines Outdoor Recreation Center (which offers outdoor equipment rental and maintenance services) and also features:

  • 8-lane, 25-yard swimming pool with 2 diving boards
  • 14-person spa
  • 4,000-square-foot climbing wall
  • 10-foot real rock boulder
  • Elevated jogging track
  • 5,500-square-foot Adolph Coors Foundation Fitness Lab featuring state-of-the-art exercise machines
  • Juice bar
  • 2 multi-purpose activity rooms
  • Recreation gymnasium

The facility was funded entirely through donations, bond financing and student fees.
